I would take a look on the Premissions Page of the virtual SMTP Server / SMTP Connector.
To trace the error you can issue the following commands on any windows command shell:
telnet <ip of your exchanges internal ip> 25
Should display EHLO or HELO ...
some lines will follow
type -> MAIL FROM: test@test.com
type -> RCPT TO: administrator@<your domain>.<tld>
type -> DATA
type -> test
type -> .
press enter
Please post the command sequence to make further error tracing possible.

run the connect to internet wizard again, (its a long shot on this one but i always do it first as it amazes me how many times it fixes weird issues) then can you post the failure message that you get, or failing that can you create a test account and give us the email address (that way you can delete it once the fault is solved). The adress doesnt need to be checked by anyone.
