OWA error because site is hosted outside?

I previously asked about a OWA certificate error message, but I think that I should have asked it differently.

Our mail server (mail.mysitename.com) is hosted in-house but our site mysitename.com is hosted at an outside hosting company because they didn't want to deal with managing their own hosting server in-house.

My question is after reading several post is:

Are we getting this error because of this setup. "There's a problem with this website's security certificate"

I recently renewed the certificate and try to make mysite.com to match mysite.com and it does not work. it's currently setup like this: Issued to mail.mysitename.com and issued by mysitename.com
