I am an exchange implementer / troubleshooter / hack. You exchange experts may not like me, but I am often pressed into service to get the job done when mission critical systems fail, etc. and require rapid recovery. Over the years, I have had many great success' but through this time the above question has continued to knaw at me and is becoming more relevant in today's world.
What is the relationship between SMTP protocol defined virtual servers and the SMTP connector?
- I assume the connector is required to send outbound email to public mail servers using the SMTP protocol?
- I assume the virtual servers under protocols>SMTP> allow you to create multiple VS's for multiple identities/domains?
- If I forward port 25 traffic on my external IP to the exchange server, am I setting up a SMTP relay if the VS is defined?
- Do I need SMTP and which one if all my clients are exchange and only the exchange server is sending out email for all clients?
I am going to make this a high-point question and yes, I should read the book, a book, any book about exchange, however I have made a few attempts and unfortunately the ones that I picked up are filled will unclear information, so I will also appreciate any recommendations on quick read references that prove valuable.
My experience dates back to MS Mail, and then exchange 4.5 with the beta of IMAP. I have worked with deployments rollouts and migrations of all versions, but never learned a lick from an instructor or class regarding the "architecture" I have learned all hands on....
Thanks for any input on this question.
