Exchange 2003 Front End server Information Store service

Asked by brett_apfc in Exchange Email Server

We are running a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 environment with 4 back end servers and 1 front end server.  The front end does not contain any mailboxes or public folders.

Recently we started getting event 9175 MSExchangeSA errors in the Application log.  From what I can tell these errors are refering to issues with the mailbox stores.  Looking at the services I can see that the Information Store is started.

If I shut the iformation store off the error messages go away, and mail continues to flow to the back end servers the way they should.

My question:  is there any reason why I should have the Information Store service running on the front end server?
