Question

Exchange account verification failed error with IPhone and Exchange 2003

Asked by: sirvodka

I know there are a few threads on this but none have provided a solution for me so I would like to start a new one.

SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003 SP2
IPhone 3G 8GB with 2.0 software

RWW/OWA working fine from Internet Explorer entering https://workplace.xyz.com/exchange with a purchased certificate from GoDaddy. User enters thier AD username and password to login.

To configure the IPhone I entered:
Email:          username@xyz.com
Server:       workplace.xyz.com
Username:  xyz\username
Password:  AD password that works in OWA

I am a little confused on which Domain name to enter as part of the username. I have different names for my internal and external domains (abc.local vs. xyz.com). I have tried both and have tried the username with no Domain and they all fail with the error "Exchange account verification failed".

Since Exchange has SP2 I am assuming there is no configuration necessary for ActiveSync. Is this correct? I have read many articles and forum threads the last couple of days with no solution. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Steve

is Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services installed? You were prompted to install it when installing SP2,

if this wasn't installed, then you will most likely need to remove SP2, and reinstall it or reinstall Exchange if it's all current.

I will look through the thread you link you supplied to see if anything helps.

I am also experiencing the same issue.  I have tried a number of different username combinations and still unable to authenticate.

Any ideas?

I have installed my SSL certificate on the IPhone (suggestion from Microsoft SBS forum) and still have the same issue. Why do some articles/threads have conflicting information on what server name to use? Some say OWA servername won't work. Here's one example. I have seen others. I am so frustrated with this!!!!!!

the OWA server name is the one you need to put unless you dont have the microsoft-server-activesync Virtual Directory
You can tell if it's installed because your mobile properties will look like picture 1 instead of picture 2

It should. The virtual directories are technically the same.

Hmmm......

Seems this error may have something to do with an issue I'm having with a remote Domain Controller. I am also getting DSAccess errors relating to that DC. I was planning to demote this DC soon because we are closing that office. Currently, I am unable to connect to it. Someone will be onsite this afternoon. I have no idea if resolving this DC issue will have any effect on the IPhone issue but who knows.

by: LegendZMPosted on 2008-07-31 at 08:42:41ID: 22130756

I would try demoting it and fixing the domain issues before exchange. Exchange relies too heavily on the domain functioning properly.

Well it seems I have stumbled across the fix for my IPhone problem. After rebuilding the virtual directories last night it was brought to my attention today the OWA was not working. Getting 403.6 forbidden ip address error. I went into IIS and set the Directory Security/IP Address and Domain Name Restrictions for the Default Website and Exchange Virtual Directories to "Grant Acess". OWA now works. I remembered that last night when I tried to connect to https://mail.xyz.com/microsoft-server-activesync externally I got the same 403.6 error. After granting access to the Microsoft-Server-Activesync Virtual Directory the 2 IPhones worked immediately. This was the fix for me. Hope it helps with others monitoring this thread.

LegendZM
I'll keep the thread open for a few days then close and award the points to you for the effort. Thanks.

by: LegendZMPosted on 2008-07-31 at 11:37:52ID: 22132322

Glad to hear you got it resolved. :)  wish you had told me about the 403.6 error sooner. In any case, glad it's working.

by: sirvodkaPosted on 2008-07-31 at 11:41:16ID: 22132353

Sorry, but I didn't get that error until I tested it externally late last night. Internally I did not get the 403.6 error.
