Offline Defrag not reducing physical store size.

Hi,

We are currently using Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2. The default database Storage group consists of one Mailbox Store and Public Folder Store. The Mailbox Store has been increased to a maximum size of 70 GB and the Public Store has been increased to maximum size of 5 GB via the registry tweaks provided by Microsoft.

Currently our priv1.edb is 59 GB and the priv1.stm is 8 GB. After the exchange daily maitenance task finishes it reports in the event log with an id of 1221: The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SVREXCHANGE)" has 1001 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

As you can see the Mailbox Store has nearly reached its maximum size of 70 GB. My understanding is that i only have 1001 MB of logical space + 3 GB of Physical space. The interesting thing is when i go into Exchange System Manager and export all the Mailbox details to .csv file the individual Mailboxes add up to a total of 24 GB.

So then i thought if i take the Mailbox Store offline and do an offline defrag that might reduce both the .edb and .stm physical files to something near 24 GB combined. I did an offline defrag using the following command
eseutil /d /p "d:\program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv.edb" /t"d:\tempdfg.edb"
After about 4 hours the tempdfg.edb file was reduced to 56 GB and the tempdfg.stm to 5 GB. As you can see I was incorrect and the files were only reduced by 6 GB total, no where near my guess of 24 GB.

So my question is should my assumption about an offline defrag be correct, that it should have been reduced to near 24 GB? If not, how can i reduce the physical size of my database files before the Mailbox Store reaches maximum size of 70 GB?

Cheers Craig

Hi uid94130,

I got a chance to extend the maintenance window. I set the window for 18 hours. After the defrag finished the Event ID 701 showed. After the exchange daily maintenance task finished it reported in the event log with an id of 1221: The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SVREXCHANGE)" has 2600 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

So after that long defrag i only gained 1600 mg of white space. Should i do this process again?
