Question

Exchange 2003 - how to rename database EDBs but keep in same location

Asked by: cmuir

We have to rename one of our Exchange 2003 SP2 mailbox stores EDB and STM files.

I know that we can use ESM to move Exchange databases but we want to keep them where they are and I know I can right click on the database in ESM and rename it there but it doesn't change the underlying database-filename.edb which is what we want to change the physical underlying file name.

I have tried taking the database offline, renaming in ESM, then amending the physical file name and tried to point ESM at the new renamed files but get an error saying "The specified destination file already exists" and it fails.

Basically just want to change the filename.edb and filename.stm and change the database paths - thought would be easy - apparently not.

Cheers

Changing the datbase path to a different location along with getting the files renamed and then moving them back will be an option.

You can use the move operation to do the same.

Choose a location with ample space. Move the database file location.
Then move it back to the same location with the filename that you want.

Simple as that.

I am trying to do as quickly as possible as the move (of 150GB) will take a while to move twice. If there is a way to just amend the path would be preferred

dismount the stores and stop Information store service.
rename databases to the name that you want
open adsiedit.msc and modify the database attributes.
check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822676 for the attributes that need to be modified.
restart service.
(take system state backup before doing anything in adsiedit.msc)
