Question

Upgrading from Exchange 2003 to 2007

Asked by: RobWasho

I currently have Exchange 2003 Standard running on MS Server 2003 R2.

I want to buy a new server, install Exchange 2007 standard on either Sever 2003 or 2008.  I then need to migrate the mailboxes over and discontinue  the old server.

Can you recommend the best practice for doing this and also what the best HP server set-up would be to use for Exchange 2007.  I know there are a number of problems etc so any help would be appreciated.

To start with, in order to install Exchange 2007, you need either 2003 / 2008 server, 64 bit OS and a server that supports 64 bit hardware.
You can install Exchange into the existing domain.

http://www.msexchange.org/articles_tutorials/exchange-server-2007/migration-deployment/upgrading-exchange-2007-server-real-life-experience.html explains the procedure.

Regarding the server, it depends on how many users you have and how big the mailstore would be. TO start with, you can try HP DL380 G5 server and use 146GB hard disks in a RAID 5 config.

Currently have around 70 users and 100 mailboxes.  The IS is currently around 65GB and the PS 16GB.

This is one of the main reasons for migration (to remove the store limit) and increase disk size overall on the server.

You can definitely move to Exchange 2007 to take advantage of the new features and limit.

You can use an HP DL380 G5 server with 146GB X 2 as a mirror for your OS, another same mirror for your transaction logs and a RAID 5 (146 X 4) for your databases. You really don't need 146GB partition for log files, so you can create a bigger RAID 5 for database and logs or use the OS mirror for logs as well.

Thanks Rajith.  Once the new server is set-up and Exchange 2007 has been installed into the existing environment, how would I go about removing the old Echange server?  Do I have to transfer over any roles or anything before uninstalling?
