Question

Move Exchange 2003 to a new domain.

Asked by: Coopsys282

I have a Exchange 2003 server that I need to move from one domain to another.  I just migrated the domain controller over to a new domain controller.  Users on the new domain are accessing the exchange server through Outlook by authenticating.  I don't have another server to load a new Exchange on so how do I move the existing Exchange server over to the new domain without building another exchange server?

Here's an article that describes what you want to do.  There's a lot involved so I would make sure that you have a good backup.
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Domain-Rename.html

I don't know how much email you have but it may be easier/cleaner to use Exmerge to export the mailboxes to PST files, rebuild the Exchange server and then import the mailboxes back in.

You can't move Exchange to another domain. You have to install Exchange in the new domain and then migrate the mailboxes over to the new one. You could export all the mailboxes to PST and then backup the server and re-install it on the new domain and re-install / reconfigure and restore the mailboxes.

If you have a lot of users I would purchase another server share the e-mail domains and migrate the mailboxes - this is a safer option and you will have a spare server for disaster recovery options.

Thanks for the help.
New scenario based on your advice is as follows.
I loaded another server with exchange 2003 and added it to my new domain (me.local).
I migrated the users using ADMT from the old domain controller (you.com) to the new domain controller (me.local).
I still have the old exchange server sitting on the you.com domain and users that login to the new domain with the same username and password have to authenticate to the exchange server on the old domain when opening Outlook, which is fine.  I want to migrate the user accounts from the old exchange (running exchange 2003) in the old domain, you.com, to the new exchange (running exchange 2003) in the new domain, me.local.
I tried using the exchange migration wizard on the new exchange server but when I select a user to test migrating over it gives me a message 'One or more users have names that conflict with other directory objects.  Unique names have been chosen and will be presented to you for for your approval.'.
Of course the names will have conflicts because the username already exists and I just want to migrate the exchange mailbox into that same username on the new domain.
I have the check box 'create/modify' selected so all I wanted was the modify part.
Any help would be appreciated?
Thanks

Coopsys282, since this is a new scenario I would recommend that you submit a new question.  You will get more people to see the question that way.  Otherwise people would have to go back to the 19th to see this question.
