Question

Waiting to Update Folder -- Message From Outlook

Asked by: apsutechteam

We are running two CAS servers, and a Mailbox server cluster.  Servers are 2003 SP1.  Exchange 2007 is SP1.We've been on the Exchange 2007 since Spring 08, and all of a sudden I am receiving numerous reports of slowness, and Outook delays -- errors messages are "waiting to update folders", and "updating Inbox". These are reports through our helpdesk and  an approximation.  I don't see anything in the Event logs  of troubled client machine or Exchange servers.  Can anyone help with what has happened or where to look?

Arggggh again one of those performance related issues, its surprising why it crops up on 64-bit boxes.
Please mention the editions of OL used ?
Also, tell me does this issue take place frequently or all the time or at odd hours.

You could run the command Get-LogonStatistics | FL to check which user is causing problems at that particular time and throwing so many RPC calls on the server. Running Exchange Best Practice Analyzer and Exchange Performance Troubleshooting Assistant tools would assist you also.

Thanks for your reply.  I ran the Performance Troubeshooting Tool, and it reports high RPC latencies and activities. It suggests some user or device gone wrong.  However, I can't open the Exmon data to see the individual stats.  I ran the Get-LogonStat comments, and it lists all users, and I afraid I don't know exactlyly what I'm looking for, or how to parse certain or high values only.  I put the exmon for 2003 on my desktop and tried to open it, and that didn't work -- and I can't find the 2007 exmon for my client -- someone on a forum had suggested this when the files wouldn't open.  Please help.

Error accessing the 'MSExchangeDSAccess Domain Controllers' performance counters. Unknown error (0xc0000bb8)

No user data was found in Exchange Server User Monitor (ExMon) ETL trace file 'C:\Perflogs\apbrexch-20081023175555\apbrexch-EXMON.etl'. This may be because you are not running this tool on a version of Windows that is the same or more recent than the server on which the trace was collected, or because there was no RPC data in the trace file.

ExMON has not been released for 64 bit boxes. You may want to run it from some XP boxes.

I am sure you might have gone through all these steps
