Question

Unable to route mail between 2 hub transport servers

Asked by: ppdevries

HI All,

We recently started experiencing an issue with mail routing between 2 exchange 2007 HT servers on our network. For some reason Server 1 (Roles: HT, MB, CAS) can sent email to server 2 (Roles: HT only), but not the other way around. I have done all the easy troubleshooting steps I can think of, but no luck. The only "error" messages that I have seen is the following in event log of server 1:

Event Type:      Warning
Event Source:      MSExchangeTransport
Event Category:      SmtpReceive
Event ID:      1037
Date:            12/2/2008
Time:            9:00:59 PM
User:            N/A
Computer:      JRCCEMSX01
Description:
Inbound direct trust certificate with thumbprint 40B6E2E05D345734DB64B26FAF48087CC3734121 has expired. Run New-ExchangeCertificate to generate a new direct trust certificate.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The only info in the smtp receive log file on server 1 is the following,

Determine whether the Network Service account has the correct permissions. Make sure that the Network Service account has Read permissions on all the keys in the following directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys, where C:\ is the directory to which Exchange 2007 was installed.
After you run new-ExchangeCertificate, run the command Get-Exchangecertificate (to find out the thumbprint of the cert you added) and then the command Enable-ExchangeCertificate -Thumbprint <your data> -Services SMTP.
Filemon can also be used to determine whether this is a permissions problem.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jules,

Thanks for advice. I had a look at the permission and all is fine. Secondly I ran the commands described, but the SMTP service does still not show up in the services list when I am running the Get-ExchangeCertificate command.

Regards,

Pieter

Hi Kris,

Tried that. The command Get-ExchangeCertificate | F1 * gives error "is not recognized as a cmdlet..."

I tried the that Jules suggested as well, but no luck.

what the heck is F1? in poweshell, you can pipe ( | ) commands out to format-list, which can be shortened to FL. but yes, get-exchangecertficate | F1 will most definitely cause an error.

ah... I miss read the line on the MS website. I tried with FL an it worked. SMTP is listed as one of the services in the most recent certificate. Please see below:
