Question

Exchange 2007 set "Reply-to" to Client set "From" field

Asked by: dough1518

When some one sends a email to whatever@yourdomain.com and then I reply it replaces the reply email to my default david@yourdomain.com. I do not want this to happen. I want it to always use the email it was sent to as the reply.

For example:
Currently the reply is replaced to: whatever@yourdomain.com -> david@yourdomain.com (your primary smtp reply-to as set by recipient Configuration->Mailbox->"User"->E-Mail Address->"set as reply")
What I want the reply to be: whatever@yourdomain.com -> whatever@yourdomain.com

When I try to set it in Outlook in the "From" text box the email gets kicked back saying:
"You are not allowed to send this e-mail message because you are trying to send mail on behalf of another sender. Please check the e-mail address to make sure it is correct, or ask your system administrator to help you get the permissions required to send e-mail on behalf of another sender."

Please help.

Exchange Server will always use the primary email address as the "send from" address, regardless of whether it's a new email or a reply email.

There is a function in Outlook that lets you override the "reply-to" SMTP header.  It's manually applied every time you want it, though.  Here's where it's at just in case you're interested:

  1. In Outlook 2007, create a new email messate.
  2. On the Options tab, click "Direct Replies To"

by: dough1518Posted on 2008-12-16 at 18:33:06ID: 23190311

with that solution, the from address will still be the primary SMTP address?

also i actually tested it and when i sent from my exchange server to a aol webmail test account, it did not either show or reply to the provided (in outlook 2007) "Direct Replies to" field

any ideas?

by: page1985Posted on 2008-12-16 at 18:34:54ID: 23190319

Can you send me an email specifying the custom "reply to"?  I'd like to take a look at the headers being generated.

IT-Support@visionnet.us

I'll post the relevant header sections when I review them just for the record of the thread.

by: dough1518Posted on 2008-12-16 at 21:16:03ID: 23190867

just sent it...i did two things:

1) i set the from address to support@validus-backup.com (which is not my "primary reply to" as defined by EMC, but it is listed as one of my accounts email addresses)

2) in outlook, i set the options->"Direct Replies To" to joey@validusdata.com  (again not my "primary reply to" but it is one of my added email addreses).

sent to: IT-Support@visionnet.us

let me know!

thanks

OK.  Out of those headers, the parts we care about are:

From: Joey Leone <jo2jo@validusdata.com>

Return-Receipt-To: <jo2jo@validusdata.com>

Is jo2jo@validusdata.com the primary email address or is that your custom address?

by: dough1518Posted on 2008-12-16 at 21:23:55ID: 23190886

see everything is jo2jo@validusdata.com, which is set as the primary reply to in EMC.  The options set in outlook are completly disreguarded

by: page1985Posted on 2008-12-16 at 21:25:03ID: 23190894

Ah, ok.  So the address that showed up in the sent info is NOT what you wanted it do be.

When you send things internally between mailboxes if you change the FROM or Reply To, does it function correctly?  Eg. is it a problem always or only externally?

Also, do you forward your mail through a third party or handle MTA events entirely internally?

by: dough1518Posted on 2008-12-16 at 21:27:37ID: 23190897

OK.  I sent an email to you with the same options set and CCed it to myself.  It appears mine functions identically.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make an assumption (heaven forbid anyone presumes to understand Microsoft), but my thoughts thus far are that in Exchange 2007 something on the back end is saying "hey, Address A, primary on Mailbox A, is sending this message.  It wants me to masquerade as Address B, but since Address B is also assigned to Mailbox A, I'm gonna just use Address A."

Have you tried setting the Reply-To to something totally out of the blue?  Maybe Info@contoso.com to see if Exchange then says "hmmmm...ok whatever" instead of trying to "smart adjust" the field?

That one seems to have redirected replies back to joe@contoso.com but, unfortunately, it didn't change the FROM.

by: dough1518Posted on 2008-12-16 at 21:33:35ID: 23190921

Wow, clicking reply gave me a reply to joey@contoso.com

the problem is, my outlook from field for your email still shows your real name and original address.  which defeats the purpose in a way..

by: page1985Posted on 2008-12-16 at 21:37:20ID: 23190936

Yes it does.  You don't want to rub in peoples noses "REPLY HERE" you want it to look like it CAME from here.

I think that is definitely going to be something to do with the FROM field.  In the past, my organization used to have multiple people assigned to internal trouble ticket processing and general systems administration...Now only me.  We used to have a distribution group with the IT-Support@ assigned to it and I was a member of it.  When people sent a ticket request, I could reply and put IT-Support@visionnet.us in the FROM field and it would send the message as "IT Support < IT-Support@visionnet.us >" but since that email address is now assigned directly to my mailbox, when I put it in the FROM field it tells me I can't send as, just like it did for you.

Perhaps if we assign the "Send As" permission to "SELF" on the mailbox in Active Directory that will circumvent the access denied message when using the FROM field to masquerade?
