Is the server Exchange is running on also a Domain Controller?

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2008-12-16 at 21:47:13ID: 23190971

Yes, this is a domain controller and it has 4 additional domain controllers at different sites. When i run dcdiag on the server it passes everything but frsevent: FRSEVENT ERROR

"[ERROR]There are warning or error events within the last 24 hours after the sysvol has been shared. Failing sysvol replication problems may cause group policy problems."

and when i run netdiag i get a DNS error.

DNS test: Failed
[FATAL] Could not open file C:\Windows\system32\config\netlogon.dns for reading.
[FATAL] No DNS servers have the DNS records for this DC registered

I have changed this file to Everyone: Read.

Ok.  It appears you have  DNS issue.

Are all of your domain controllers able to contact each other presently?

Can you ping all your other domain controllers from this one?

If you do an NSLOOKUP on the root of your internal domain (ex. domain.local) what are the results?

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2008-12-16 at 22:12:58ID: 23191037

It was giving me 10 addresses, i removed 3 and now i have 7 which is correct for each site, Although i am unable to ping 1 of the addresses, which will probably be the issue.

I will get that resolved and see how that goes.

Do remember if you are running the 32-bit version support tolols on the 64-bit OS, those errors are misleading.

Does the DC running the local Exchange server hold any of the FSMO roles?

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2008-12-17 at 15:58:08ID: 23199563

Ok, if i do a nslookup on the domain name is can ping all the addresses, Yes the primary DC/Exchange holds all the FSMO roles. Still getting same error.

Even when i browse to the dir and perform setup.com /prepareAD or /prepareschema.

FYI the server is x64, Standard R2. I've just performed adprep /domain + forest and its fine.

Make sure the binding order of the NICs is correct in the Network Connections of the Exchange Server. The Disabled adapter should not be at the top.

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2008-12-18 at 16:28:49ID: 23209233

The NICs have correct binding order.

by: abdulzisPosted on 2008-12-19 at 02:32:21ID: 23211263

Do ipconfig /all and make sure no external DNS servers are specified.

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2008-12-22 at 15:49:29ID: 23230601

There is no external DNS servers and the server has had a reboot.

In which domain/site is the Schema master located?

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2009-01-13 at 18:02:09ID: 23369429

The schema master is located on the exchange server.

Any one have any other ideas?

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2009-04-29 at 19:07:43ID: 24266392

Ok, so i have got a step further,

When the schema master is on the domaincontroller/exchange server and i run the readiness check it fails with that initial error, although when i transfer the schema master to any of the other 5 additional domain controllers the readiness check completes fine.

I know i could install SP1 and transfer the schema master role back after it installs but that could lead to more issues..

by: stellarsystemsPosted on 2009-09-25 at 01:07:15ID: 25420862

Moved the schema master to a additional domain controller and installed SP1, transferred schema master back to main server, restarted.

Working fine.
