Test restore environment exchange 2007?

Hi!

I have a working exchange 2007 server. I perform regular backup with Tivoli Storage Manager via a remote nackup provider.  Now, I want to do a test restore of my databases, to see how long time it would take in case of emergency, and also to verify that the databases are working.
Here are my questions:

1: How would i set this up? would i need to setup a test server with the same name as my existing mailserver, or can i restore to a recovery storage group and still see if everything mounts okay?
2: If I setup a new test server with the same name, would that jack up my AD since the AD would see 2 identical servers? I could of course disable the network, but then i wouldnt be able to see the DC!

Any good advice will be rewarded.... and appreciated. ;)

Also, now as far as your test setup is concerned.
  • Well create another DC in same forest and let AD replicate to it
  • Once this process is over, take out this server of current network (and then in production follow process, as if DC server went down and remove it)
  • Now in the server (test environment) install Exchange with same name and go ahead with links that I gave you earlier
let me know
Thanks

Imp Tip: Make sure that new DC / Exchange DO NOT TALK TO PRODUCTION NETWORK !!!

Hi Gupnit!

Thanks, but i am only for now interested in testing if the storage groups would actually mount and work. This means that i do not have to make an additional test environment, but could do it right on the production server, right?

Also, if I did a "test" environment, wouldnt the new exchange server and the discontinued DC have to be connected in a network? So I would have to make a Vlan or something between the 2 servers, right?

Thanks for all you help so far.
Rewarding the good advice with points of course! ;)

Thanks so far, ill keep you posted.
Surething....
Ermm when i try to add my new "Fake" mail server to the "domain" consisting only of the isolated domain cntroller, it says that the account mail1.mydomain.com already exists........ so now what?
And?
