4.4.7 Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified.

Exchange 2003

Problem: Certain messages get NDR's. Looking at SMTP log finding that those messages hang at the DATA section within the SMTP transfer process. All other in/out smtp traffic fine. I manually connect using SMTP to test and it works fine.

Happening with multiple users to multiple domains.

The most common cause of delivery problems is interference with the SMTP traffic. The usual source of that interference is something between the server and the internet - a firewall for example - that is scanning the SMTP traffic.

EXCHANGE SERVER --> ASA --> Internet

ASA is not filtering... Just firewall.

I presume that is a Cisco ASA?
By default it has a mail filtering option enabled. Mail Guard I think it is called. Something like that. It is notorious for causing problems with SMTP delivery.

I found the solution. It was Trend Micro AV running on the Exchange server. I believe it was flagging the .EML file's and truncating them so that they were not in proper SMTP formatting and they would get stuck when the Exchange server would try to send them out and eventually NDR.
