Question

Zetafax Client

Asked by: grjitdept

Basically we use a zetafax plugin / application that connects to our exchange server and to the individual desktop clients.

One of our users who uses a Zetafax client is regularly getting the following error message: One of your MSGDIR.CTL files has been deleted or corrupted and will be rebuilt.
When this error appears no incoming faxes can be opened, in addition when you close the Zetafax client it deletes the Fax(s) that couldnt be opened.

I've gone in on the server side and deleted the CTL file that I believe is corrupt so that it can re created itself as mentioned in Eqcuisy's website and have also turned off Received Message alerts. The perculiar thing is that when I delete the CTL file the client receives faxes as per usual until varied times where the error message appears again and we run into the same problem.

Any input would be greatly appriciated for this.

Thanks

Don't really know what's causing this, but there's a MSGDIR.CTL file in each user's Z-IN and Z-OUT folder.  Try opening the affected one in Notepad, and see if it really does look corrupted.  It should only contain ASCII characters, and it should be legible (after a fashion).

Do you have an AV scanner on the ZF server?  I doubt that such a thing is necessary on a machine that is running only ZF and nothing else - but if there is one, at least make sure that it is not configured to scan the ZF folder heriarchy.

Hi Lee

Thanks for the reply, the file I believe to be corrupted is the MSGDIR.CTL file in the Z-In folder as its incoming fax we seem to be having issue's with. I've opened the file and it looks fine, as mentioned before I deleted the file which Zzetafax then rebuilds.

With regards to an AV scanner we have Zetafax on our exchange server and also our exchange mailbox is on the same server so we do have a Trend Micro AV scanner in place but I dont see how this would affect incoming fax.

One thing I have noticed that is different to the clients mailbox to any other is that their is a MSGDIR.RBD file, although this mailbox is our general fax line which is then distributed around the office so I'm not sure if we need the RBD file or what it actually does?

Does your Trend Micro AV scanner also do file system scanning, or just email?  File scanners can interfere with lots of applications that use files as their databases, which ZF does with its .CTL files.  Anyway, if it does scan the file system, try (just as a test) excluding the ZF dirs from its on-access scanning.

Hi Lee

We've tested this over the weekend and had the same issue this morning, through discussion it seems the problem began when we pushed out some windows updates, a .net framework update caused issues with our telephone system that we managed to resolve. Any idea's how an update of this nature could affect Zetafax?

I'm afraid not.  Did you try asking them?  Does this happen from all workstations?  It's hard to even tell if it's a server-side problem, or a client-side problem, since ZF has processes running at both ends.

Hi Lee

Just to let you know we've decided not to use the Zetafax client itself and rather have faxes go straight to the users exchange mailbox. Therefore i'll close this question down.  Thanks again for the help and advice.
