Opening a second mailbox in different forest with Outlook 2003 Exchange 2003/2007

Hi

Environment:
2 x AD 2003 Forests, Forest A (Trusting) and Forest B (Trusted)

Is it possible to open a secondary mailbox within an Outlook 2003 session from forest B to a mailbox that resides in forest A?

I have tried adding the MBX in domain format DOM\USER via advanced settings but it is stating "the name could not be resolved. The name coulld not be matched to a name in the address list".

Do I need to create a new GAL entry in Forest B with all users from Forest A, so that I can open 2 mailboxes within the same session?

I can add the mailbox as a new profile with no problem, so I know the 'trust' is working as expected.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
Bry

Hi,
i'm sorry, but adding two exchange accounts in one profile just isn't possible in Outlook. Only thing you could do is add a second account using imap.

@EvilKnievel,

Why wouldn't you be able to do so ..

@BryanOakley
Yes you would need to make sure that the email account is visible through the address book .. so either add it to the GAL or setup a different Address list with the information

Also How did you try to add this account.. through Extra > account options > change > more settings > tab advanced ???

if not try it there?

Hi EvilKnievel

Thanks for the speedy reply.
For clarification, what I am 'trying' to achieve, is:

user logged in and authenticated by Forest B
open outlook and mailbox in Forest B
then add/open a secondary/additional mailbox "in advanced settings/change email settings/more settings etc" with access to an additional mailbox that is in Forest A using new user account credentials from Forest A, so that in the outlook session, I have multiple mailboxes open (as is normal procedure from within the same forest/domain with the right permissions as far as I have done successfully before).

I can open the additional mailbox fine if I create the mail profile - I would just like to be able to do this within 1 outlook session per se.

Any pointers or is defo a not able to do?

Thanks again for your response.

Cheers

Hi RightNL

Thanks also for the speedy response...
Yes, I tried adding the additional mailbox via, tools>e-mail accounts>change>more settings>advanced.

I have been able to add additional mailboxes before but generally from within the same forest. I would've thought though, <with correct permissions/trust in-place>, that this could be done inter-forest also.

So if I get the entries added to the GAL I should then be able to add the mailbox?
Is there a way of hard-coding this through script or similar?

Cheers
Bry

Hi Mestha

Thanks for your reply -
I am able to open a profile in either forest with no issues -
What I would like to do, is in one of those profiles in Forest A, open an additional mailbox (as is standard procedure) to another mailbox in Forest B via tools>e-mail accounts>change>more settings>advanced etc...

I just get an issue stating the name could not be resolved and this is where I am stuck.
I am putting DOMAIN\USER.

I would think this could be achieved - Any pointers?

To summise, I only want '1' profile open but with an additional mailbox added from a different forest (to which I can open a profile on it's own in a different forest with no problem).

Cheers

Hi BryanOakley,
see my first answer, it can not be done unfortunately in the situation you'd want.

@RightNL
The reason why you can't get this to work is behaviour by design, microsoft just didn't implement it.
Hi EvilKnievel

Thanks again for your reply - So I am definately not able to have an additional mailbox from another forest but I can have an additional mailbox from within the same forest (as in my attached .jpg)?

really, I just can't believe that MS have not allowed this (shame on them :-)
If this is the case, any suggestions on how I may achieve what I am after?

Cheers
Bry

You could try the option Mestha suggested, maybe that works for you :)
Hi
Thanks all for responding to my question, it is very appreciated.
Ok, so MS just didn't allow for this solution, shame really as I am most certain a whole bunch of users would find this feature very useful...

Anyhow, EvilKnievel has been excellent and very speedy and Mestha has also confirmed that this cannot be done, so thanks to both you guys.

I have decided to give EvilKnievel 400 and Mestha 100 points for getting back with the same conclusion.
I hope this point split is ok.

@RightNL
Thanks also for your input, again it is very appreciated.
