The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Exchange Offline Defrag

An offline defrag of Exchange is run twice a month. These defrags are not run in order to gain "white space" but rather when classified messages are accidentally run through our unclassified system. Defragging removes these messages.  No ifs, ands or buts - these defrags are mandatory!

We have three Exchange 2003 Enterprise servers.  Each has 3 storage groups with anywhere between 8-9 databases.  Also, for some reason, one Storage Group per server has its own Public Folder created.

On the last offline defrag, two databases on seperate servers was run. One server database was roughly 43GB and the other 40GB. Offlince defrag of Server #2 with 40GB was started first, then about 30 minutes later, defrag of Server #1 with 43GB was started.  At completion, Server #2 took 6 hours to complete, whereas Server #1 took 4.5 hours.  These servers are identical in hardware, patches, etc., but Server #2 always runs defrags slower - MUCH slower, than the other two servers.  I do realize, 6 hours is a typical amount of time to run defrag, but the speed of this server warrants my attention.

I have also noticed the store.exe on Server #2 is always running all 4 processors at least 66+%; which I monitor with SolarWinds Exchange Monitor and which is constantly giving me a utlization warning.  The other two, normally have all 4 processors running the store.exe at 14%.

Does anyone have any input on how I can speed up this defrag on Server #2 and why it constantly consumes so much CPU utlization with store.exe?  Also, when running defrags, all databases in a store are dismounted in an attempt to speed up the process.
