Question

Exchange SMTP connector and POP/SMTP mail in Outlook: Sometimes I send through Exchange and sometimes through my ISP.

In Outlook I have POP mail and Exchange.  The POP mail is delivered to the exchange store.

At the server level I've added an SMTP connector so that any mail not to be delivered to an internal "username@server.local" address is forwarded.

This works most of the time.  In Outlook the Exchange server is set as default.  However, sometimes mail is sent via Exchange and sometimes via my POP/SMTP account.

Why is this happening?  My users aren't selecting the POP/SMTP.  The default just appears to be going back and forth.

Outlook normally sends by Exchange if used, so it should go out of that route. Why setup POP at all in your Outlook client. If the mails comes in via the Exchange server and you are sending via the Exchange server ?

emails come in via POP.

Exchange checks username@server.local
POP checks uername@domain.com

The exchange is not hosting their internet email, only their office email.  Therefore each Outlook checks 2 accounts.  1) Exchange Mail   2) POP Mail.

As for delivery, there is no PST so the POP mail gets put in the exchange store.  By default it should send via Exchange which will then forward email out of a SMTP connector to the hosted SMTP server.

This happens most of the time, but sometimes it sends out of the second account.

Think of it like having Outlook with 2 POP accounts.  One is you@business.com and the other is you@personal.com.  Your default account is business.com, but sometimes it sends via personal.com

I wonder if it is a reply issue....  Can I force Outlook to always send via the one account no matter how it is received?

If you specify 2 POP accounts in Outlook then you can do that, but if you use a Exhcange account in Outlook then you can't specify.

If one of cusotmers wants to do this - I  usually setup 2 POP accounts (One using POP to pickup from the Exchange server)  and then you can specify which one sends by default. However, you cann not then save emails in the Exhcnage mailbox only in a PST

Therefore, my suggestion whould be to add the domain on to the exchange server. If you do not want to use SMTP email (and do not have SBS server - which includes a POP connector), then use something like IGetMail (or many simular products) that pickup POP accounts and put in your Exchange mailboxes.
