mail.mydomain.local and .com

I have a .local internal domain and a .com external domain with a SSL certificaate from Godaddy. My question is, in exchange server on the inside I use exchangehostname.mydomain.local for outlook. I then have to establish a VPN connection, use owa or rpc over https to connect outside the organisation. This really isn't much of an issue for outlook. The issue is, now im trying to configure Thunderbird on Ubuntu 9.04. I keep getting an error of 12263 when trying to connect to exchange. I have tried SSL and TLS with no change. Is there a DNS record or something I can add so that I can use mail.mydomain.com for both internal and external settings on my mail clients?

Thanks. I did as you both suggested and it worked flawlessly
Yeah I was going to add that as an option Chris, but as I started to write it out I realised I couldn't make it sound any less than utterly, utterly confusing :)
