>>> Note: I moved a Blackberry user from one store to another and I had to re activate the Blackberry to work....
This should not have been the case. How did you move the user?
Hi Guys,
We have currently a DC on Windows 2003 and have a Exchange 2003 Ent. Edition. We are running out of space and cannot do defrag's on it. So we decided to add a seconday Exchnage server to the same DC. And then move the mailboxes to the secondary server and then delete the store and recreate it on the old. This way we will not have longer down times and users will not be impacted. Also we have a BES server 4.1. And we have about 125 Blackberry users.
Here is my question:
1. How do I do this correctly (Steps to the approch)?
2. How will the mail (Interenal and Exteranl) email flow from the secondary server. (Only for temprpory)?
3. Will the Blackberry users lose their setting with the server because the server changed and store name changed?
Note: I moved a Blackberry user from one store to another and I had to re activate the Blackberry to work....

Using the Exchange enabled Active Directory Users and Computers - like what is on the server.
I really appriciate your instant feedback..this is great.
Thanks I will try it and let you know....from the point of installing the secondary Exchange server and mail flow...will I have an issue for the users who are moved to the secondary exchange server sending and receiving email?.
And also is the 2nd install of the Exchange server complecatd or straight forward...?
Thanks
Provided the users are connecting using Outlook to Exchange as "Exchange Server" (versus POP3), Outlook will automatically reconfigure for the new server. The use of the mailbox will be momentarily interrupted for each user as they are moved. Any new messages will be delivered to the new mailbox.
Joining an existing organization is simple and part of the installation process.
Since the old server is going to remain within the infrastructure, you should have no issues with the Exchange organization and connectors.
After installing Windows, join the domain. (It is recommended to not make the machine a Domain Controller)
Install Exchange on the server, during installation it will ask if you will be creating a new organization or joining an existing organization. You will supply the "Exchange Organization" name to join the existing Exchange infrastructure.
If you get the Exchange org prompt then something is wrong.
You should not get an Exchange org prompt if the server is seeing the domain correctly. It detects the original org and lets you continue as you cannot have two orgs in the same forest.
The main thing to worry about with regards to BES is permissions. Before moving any users ensure that the permissions are correct on the new server for the BESADMIN account, otherwise Blackberry will stop working.
Simon.
The secondary Exchange server is a member of the main DC...so the BESADMIN account is part of the DC. Do I have to add the besadmin account to the secondary Exch servers Local admin group?..because that is how it is in the currrent Exch server.
If not what do I have to do on the Secondary Exch server (the Steps) to make sure all BB users to access without an issue.
I moved a test BB user not on the secondary server but to another store on the current server. Then the BB users blackberry stopped communicating (No Emails can be sent fron the BB or receive) so what do you think is the issue. In this case the secondary server is not even in the picture.
Nothing to do with permissions on the server itself. Blackberry requires permissions within Exchange.
Did you setup the original Blackberry server? If so then I would suggest that you find the instructions you followed and apply the same permission changes to the new server that you made to the old one.
Simon.
Thank you modus_operandi - I am recommending #3, with 250 points awarded to Mestha (4731823) and 250 points awarded to Delphineous (4232010).
Delphineous answered the questions posed within the original request, including detailed information, which were appropriate and included follow-up on subsequent questions. Mestha provided additional information that addressed an issue experienced by the requestor during implementation caused by incorrectly configured permissions.

The key is to use Active Directory Users and Computers to move the mailboxes to the new server. This operation is best performed from the new server. (Makes it a little faster and more reliable)
Mail flow will be temporarily interrupted, but messages will sit en queue durign the move - no mails will be lost.
The BES will automatically use the mailbox that has been moved.
