Question

Last Logged on by

Asked by: 12string

Hello Experts,

Is there a log file that keeps records of who has been logging into mail users account?  I have an issue with our exchange server such that I have noticed that other exchange admins have been logging into another person email account.   Do not know why this is happening i just noticed it the other day when I went into ESM and mailboxes and found one person had logged into another users email.  Or maybe not a log file but some where else?  Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

for what it's worth this is my exchange server.

Are you using admin account for backup. If that is the case, this will happen.

You could try free tools like Exmon or third party like Message Stats which will give detailed reporting.

Last logged on by does not mean the user actually accessed the mailbox. There are many reasons why that filed can be populated, for legitimate reasons - like calendar lookups.

If another mailbox is access by someone other than the user then it should be logged in the event viewer, although I cannot remember if you have to turn up diagnostic logging to get that level of logging.

This symptom will also occur if one user has permission to access another user's folder, such as a Calendar. It appears in ESM as "last logged in by" when in fact the user in question has actually just accessed another user's folder.

Thanks so far:

"Are you using admin account for backup?" no the admin that was looking at this info does not reside on our exchange server but they do have domain admin rights.

"Last logged on by does not mean the user actually accessed the mailbox."  in this case it does because we are looking at an individual that is leaving the company and some strong issues are most likely to come after this individual leaves.  This users would not have been sharing there calendar or anything else with this user or any users.

"You could try free tools like Exmon."  I am not sure how Exmon can give me a list of users that have looked at this persons account.  I down loaded and it gives me stats but that is not what I am after.

I will check out "Message Stats"

Message stats isn't going to give you anything of use that I am aware of.
Exmon also isn't going to give you historical information, it is a live login tool.

The only thing that will tell you that a mailbox has been opened is an entry in the event viewer. The last logged on by information cannot be relied upon, plain and simple.

Thank you Mestha!  can you give me a microsoft website that verifies your assumption.  it would really help since I have to prove myself to my superiors.

I am not aware of anything on Microsoft that can prove what I have said, it simply based on my own observations working with Exchange for many years.
