Question

Exchange 2003 Offline Defrag

Asked by: mdmcq5

I am trying to determine the last Offline Defrag and am not certain of the Event Id. I have also noticed on one of the servers all the logs have been cleared, so is there a way other than through the Event Viewer to determine the last OFFLINE defrag?

I actually believe it may be Event 101 Source: ESE

Is there a way to determine whether the process was "canceled"

I believe eseutil /m will give you that information.

Offline defrag doesn't log anything, because it is done offline. The most you will find is when the database was dismounted.

Furthermore it isn't possible to cancel the process and continue to use the same files. It either completes, or you restore a backup (either a copy of the original files or a true backup).

I agree with Mestha. Also, there is no harm to run defrag multiple times as its only going to reduce the DB size.

what if eseutil is run on the .stm rather than the .edb, will the .edb file be automatically defragged like when running eseutil on the .edb it also includes the .stm - if I'm not mistaken

mestha,
when you run an offline defrag on the .edb it automatically pulls and defrags the .stm file.  what if you run the defrag on the .stm, will that defrag automatically pull and defrag the associated .edb?

I haven't run an offline defrag for over four years. I have never run it on Exchange 2003 SP2 as there is almost no point. I cannot answer specific questions on the process simply because I don't do it.

Asking the same question three times in the same post isn't going to help get any other responses. Your original question was answered. If you have further questions you should ask them fresh - that is why it was ignored.

Simon,
I'd rather you answer with you don't know the answer, than you not say anything at all. I always appreciate your input.
