Expand the Mailbox Store -->  Right click on Mailboxes folder and select Run Cleanup Agent

by: MrLonandBPosted on 2009-06-02 at 11:13:57ID: 24529742

If it is in fact orphaned and Cleanup doesn't do it, try the following:

Method 1: Remove the orphaned mailbox by using Exchange maintenance
1.      Start Exchange System Manager.
2.      Locate and then click the mailbox store that you want. For example, to locate the Mailbox Store (My_Server) store, follow these steps:
a.       Expand Administrative Groups, expand First Administrative Group, expand Servers, and then expand My_Server.
b.       Expand First Storage Group, and then click Mailbox Store (My_Server).

3.      On the Action menu, click Properties, and then click the Limits tab.
4.      Under Deletion settings, type a number that is less than the age of the orphaned mailbox in the Keep deleted mailboxes for (days) box. For a mailbox that is newly orphaned, type 0 (zero).
5.      Configure the maintenance schedule. To do this, follow these steps:
a.       Click the Database tab.
b.       In the Maintenance interval box, click Use custom schedule, and then click Customize.
c.       In the list of days, click the current day so that the row for that day is highlighted. This schedules the maintenance for all day.

Note The scheduling of maintenance for all day can be set or removed. To do this, click a day in the list of days.

6.      Click OK.
7.      Exit Exchange System Manager.
8.      Allow for online maintenance to finish. This may take several hours. You will see event ID 1221 logged in the Application log when online maintenance is finished.
9.      In Exchange System Manager, use the Run Cleanup Agent on the Mailboxes folder that contains the orphaned mailbox.

This will not work in Exchange 2007...I believe this mailbox is responsible for not allowing any mods to any mailboxes in the store. I need to remove it and have tried both GUI commands and cmdlets to get rid of it but it seems to be hung because it can't find it's non-existent AD user. It has been about 2 weeks since this occurred

You can run the Clean-MailboxDatabase cmdlet in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 to achieve the same results as the Run Cleanup Agent action in the Exchange Server 2003 System Manager.

Clean-MailboxDatabase -identity "dbname"

Check http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124076.aspx for more info.

I have tried that and it does nothing.

by: Rajith_EnchiparambilPosted on 2009-06-02 at 11:43:38ID: 24530024

That command should clean up the database. Restart the info store service for a faster cleanup.

I'm having the same issue. Did you ever find a resolution?

by: mdmcq5Posted on 2009-07-01 at 08:35:54ID: 24755444

I was able to get my orphaned mailbox issue resolved.  I had noticed the user accounts in the NetIQRecycleBin in Active Directory, however I did not have access.  We use a third party tool called DRA, so I located the deleted accounts in the recycle bin, restored, deleted the mailboxes and then redeleted the accounts.  Ran the cleanup on Exchange and mailboxes marked for deletion and then purged.

Can you by chance perform a search in AD and locate those orphaned mailbox users in the Recycle Bin?
