Question

Blackberry BES server upgrade

Asked by: ablsysadmin

Hi guys

seems like I've just inherited a BES environment  and I've just been given the task of upgrading the server from 4.1.4 to 4.1.6.
from what I can see , there are 2 download packages located on the server namely "besx416mr1.zip" and "besx_upgrader_4.1.6.exe".
my initial task on this server was to move the database to a different SQL server but it seems as if the last installation done was not correct cos it does not allow me to open the blackberry server configuration console , it throws out an error " please run setup.exe to complete the installation" , and because of this I'm hoping that the upgrade to 4.1.6 will fix this issue and then allow me to move the database.
Could somebody please assist me with the process of getting this upgrade done.

Thanks
Brad

Hi, first you need to install besx_upgrader_4.1.6.exe and then you should apply besx416mr5.zip.  If your BES is unable to open the BlackBerry Configuration it means the last person who did an upgrade accidently selected the "BlackBerry Enterprise Server with MDS Integration" or they didnt know the MDSS passwords.  Before you begin the upgrade retrieve the admin password from the server.xml file by opening it and searching for username.

<Installation directory>\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\MDSS\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.9\conf\server.xml

When you install a SP or MR update you MUST logon using the BlackBerry Service Account (e.g. BESadmin).

Hi

thanks for the prompt response.
3 things , firstly I only have "besx416mr1.zip" , so should I download "besx416mr5.zip" and install it or can I use the one I have. reason why I'm not too concerned with moving to the latest MR is because I plan on going to BES 5 soon.
and secondly , I've got the username and password from the "server.XML" file , what should I do with this.
and thirdly , what is MDSS and how do I check if it was installed.

thanks

1. If you are going to install a Maintenance Release after installing SP6 you may as well install the latest version.

http://www.blackberryforums.com.au/forums/blackberry-announcements/4428-bes-4-1-service-pack-6-mr-5-exchange.html

2. You will need the password for the admin account during the upgrade process when it updates MDSS.  This is most likely the reason why the last update was not completed correctly.

3. As you located the MDSS service this indicates it's installed on your BES.  On BES you have the Mobile Data Service (MDS) which allows you to access intranet and internet sites using your internal internet connection.  Then you have MDSS which has recently been renamed to the MDS Integration Service which is a component that allows you to create and deploy custom applications (with the assistance of additional desktop tools.).
Additional Info:

As the last update was not completed when you run the BES SP6 installer it may continue the previous installation.  If this is occurs it will start at the MDSS set screens, just enter the password you located in the server.xml document when prompted.

Hi

Thanks for that info.
I've downloaded "besx416mr5.zip" and plan on doing the implementation tomorrow night.
I will install the "besx_upgrader_4.1.6.exe " first and then "besx416mr5.zip".
and I will have the username and password handy for when it prompts me during the installation.
is there anything else that I need to keep in mind when doing the upgrade , like stopping services prior to installation, will the server reboot once as part of the installation and then continue with the second half , and stuff like that.

Brad

You don't need to stop any services before you begin but I normally take a backup of the database before I begin.  Also to confirm you need to:

1.Logon using you BlackBerry Service Account (e.g. BESadmin)
2. Run the BES SP6 upgrade
3. During the install it will prompt you to reboot
4. After the reboot logon using your BlackBerry Service Account again
5. The installer will continue after a few minutes.

fantastic , thanks for the info.
looks like I'll only be doing my implementation next week , I'll keep you updated.
also , I've just found out that RIM has released a new security patch will I'll also be installing next week, link provided below.

I am not quite sure what you mean by moving the database to another database server ...  You're required to do that because of business decision, or because the BES install seems out of whack?

Depending of the number of users in your BES environment, one thing to keep in mind when upgrading to 4.1.6 is to make sure you set the BES Services to manual for any interim reboots.  Only when you have applied the LAST MR (whichever you decide on) that you would change services to Automatic and start them.  4.1.6 by default will attempt to resend IT Policies to all devices...  MR has tweat to throttle the pushes down to 20 (I think).

Hi Guys

thanks for all the info you provide but my upgrade went tits up so I'm still on 4.1.4.
sorry for the late reply but I was on leave and studying for a bit.
I dont even know where to begin explaining what went wrong but it seems like my roll back plan even gave errors so it took me about 3 hours to get it back to its original state.
but thanks anyways for the assistance.
I'm now gonna be posting a new question regarding the upgrade from 4.1.4 to version 5.
hope you'll be giving me some tips.
