So you're not using Exchange at all? Either way you need to use authentication to send through GMail : http://mail.google.com/sup
Also, you need to make sure POP email is enabled under the settings of your GMail account. https://mail.google.com/su
You can also allow "Send As" in your gmail settings by adding an additional account to your gmail account.
are you using the new gmail service where you can use your companies FROM address to send out emails? i.e send emails using gmail to others and they would see the email as if it came from your company email address? if so then your company smtp server needs to allow gmail to relay off it. what gmail does in the case above is that all emails that have a FROM address that is your company email address are sent to your company email server which then delivers it. this ensures that your emails are not marked as being spoofed by the recipients servers. so you need to open your company email server to allow gmail to relay off it.

Are you sending through an Exchange server using POP3? Looks like you just need to enable authentication on the outgoing SMTP connection, if that's the case.
