Question

changing expired password in owa 2007

Asked by: danskoit

I am trying to setup the password change feature in OWA 2007 to change expired passwords.  I have gotten to the point that it takes me to the page saying that the password has expired.  The only way I can get this to work is to use domain name\username.  I want to know if you can do this without having to specify the domain name.  I was able to do it in exchange 2003.
Thanks.

The password change feature is by default setup in OWA 2007. Once you access OWA and then go to options in the left hand pane you get an option to change password, There the domain\username is already specified you just need to enter you old password and the new password.

Try changing the default domain to \ instead of any domain name under the OWA Virtual Directories properties

We can try this.... set-casmailbox -identity "Domain\USER" -OWAChangePasswordEnabled:$true

for username only... set-casmailbox -identity "USER" -OWAChangePasswordEnabled:$true

see if it works and let us know...

I'm not 100% sure this will do what you want, but it's worth a shot:

If you use the Exchange Management Console, try expanding Server Configuration > Client Access.  Under the "Outlook Web Access" tab, right-click "owa (Default Web Site)" and click "Properties".  Click the "Authentication" tab.  If "Use forms-based authentication" is selected, you can change the Logon Format from "Domain\user name" to "User name only".  Then click the "Browse..." button to select the appropriate logon domain.  Hit apply, and follow the instructions to reset IIS.  If you do this, your users will have to log on to OWA using ONLY their user name and password (without entering the domain or their UPN).

I would imagine that changing the logon method would also change the requirements for resetting the password, but I've never tested that theory.  Worth a shot, though...  You can always change it back if it doesn't work...

Configuring the Change Password Feature in Outlook Web Access

Consider checking with this as well, I understand that this applies to Exchange 2003 but worth a look

Could you plaese let me know the OS on which Exchange 2007 server is installed. The IISADPMWD functionality is included with Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 in Windows Server 2003. The IISADPMWD functionality is not included with or supported in Windows Server 2008 or in Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0. The Change Password feature in Exchange Server 2007 Outlook Web Access does not require the IISADMPWD functionality.

However you can try the below steps if you still want to change password. This is a workaround :) -

(1) You have to navigate to [c:\windows\system32\inetsrv] and create a directory called IISADMPWD on Windows 2008 CAS.

(2) If you have Front end Exchange 2003 in the environment, you can copy the contents (all the ASP files) of the [ C:\Windows\System32\Inetsrv\iisadmpwd] directory to the new directory on Windows 2008 CAS "IISADMPWD"

(3) Then from IIS 7 Administration tool on Windows 2008 CAS [ START-> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager ] and expand [ <Server Name> -> Sites ] right click to Default Web Site and then from the context menu that appeared choose the Add Virtual Directory Option

(4) Within the dialog box that opened provide the following information as -
Alias : IISADMPWD
Physical path : C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\iisadmpwd
Click OK

(5) After clicking on the OK button in the IIS 7 interface - you could now see new IISADMPWD virtual directory - right click on the new virtual directory entry and from the context menu that appear chose Convert to Application option

(6) From the dialog box that appeared chose the Select Button located next to the Application Pool data section, from the drop down menu entitled Application Pool choose the MSExchangeOWAAppPool option and then clicked on the OK button and then OK again which return us to the main IIS 7 admin screen

(7) From the right hand tree node in the IIS manager select IISADMPWD application directory which changed the main window to display the configurable options - under the IIS section. Now double click on the Authentication option to ensure only Basic authentication set.

(8) Perform iisreset. Then it should work.

However if you do not have IISADMPWD file, I am attaching the same here.

What you need to know about the OWA Change Password feature of Exchange Server 2007

Read this from the same Blog Entry
Please note that the IISADMPWD functionality is not included with IIS 7.0 on Windows Server 2008.  Some workarounds have been posted on the web that show a method to implement the same behavior for IIS 7.0.  However, these workarounds are not supported or recommended by Microsoft and we have observed that the solution does not always work as expected with Exchange Server 2007.

If you want to implement this you need to have a ISA firewall

I am running enterprise server 2003 R2.  I am talking about the IISADMPWD functionality, not the built in change password functionality.  That is the part that I am trying to get to work without putting the domain\ in the username field. Thanks.

scorpianking: Check with post ID: 25018124 I have already suggested the same Article

It will not work without the domain/username.

The reason being, if you do not put domain/username it will search Username in the Local Computer and will fail to authenticate, where in if you use the domain/username it will directly contact the AD and will change the password..

It does NOT work without the DOMAIN/USERNAME
