Question

Exchange 2007 SP2 install issues on a CCR Cluster

Asked by: osiexchange

Has anyone attempted an upgrade to SP2 from SP1 of Exchange 2007 in a CCR Cluster. I am trying it in a test environment that I test all SP2 etc.... before doing it in production. I am currently running Exchange 2007 SP1 with rollup 4. I am following the directions in the following articles:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb676320(printer).aspx

I am getting some strange errors. Its acting like Exchange is not even installed. Here is just one of the errors it spits out:
Setup encountered a problem while validating the state of Active Directory: Exchange Organization has not been created and setup cannot create them because the lcoal computer is not in the same domain as the schema master. Run setup with the prepareAD parameter on a computer in the domain that contains the schema master.

Now I have had this Exchange CCR Cluster running for about a year now and I use it for testing. Is this just a hack in the SP2 install program. I know it just came out but I am anxious to test it. Has anyone successfully installed SP2 on Exchange in a CCR Cluster.

Are you doing it off the GUI or the command line?
The recommendation on CCR I am hearing is to use the command line because of the domain prep that is required. In my lab tests the prep takes longer than the install of the actual binaries.

I am using setup.com /m:upgrade like the article states. I am running it on the Passive Node

Did you remove the rollups?
You haven't got anything odd configured? Exchange on a domain controller etc?

You don't need to remove the rollups. If you look at the article I posted, it says removing the rollups is not necessary, although I can try this. One thing I forgot to mention is that I am running the CCR Cluster on Windows 2008, SP2. I have a separate server for everything. Root Domain DC, Child Domain DC,
CAS/Hub server and the CCR Cluster

I tried to run the install on my Hub Transport/CAS server only using setup.exe and the GUI interface. I got the exact same error only in graphical form so it looks like my VM evnironment might be messed up somehow. Just answer me this. Are there any special prerequisites that need to be done or do you just run setup? For instance, do you need to be logged in with schema admins or enterprise admins rights? If you were successful in upgrading, did everything work ok or did you have any issues?

Sounds like MS contradicting themselves.
From the release notes: "You must uninstall all Interim Updates prior to installing Exchange 2007 SP2."

I haven't got access to a lab CCR at the moment. I will not be doing a live CCR for at least 10 days. On my non-CCR lab systems and my home system the upgrade has gone straight in - it just took a while. However that was expected, as I have had the service pack a little while.

Ideally you need to be logged in as the root forest enterprise admin - so usually Administrator of the root domain. That will ensure that you have the rights required.

Its telling me to run setup /prepareAD. I remember doing this when I first installed Exchange 2007 SP1. Do I need to do it again with the SP2 binaries before I install SP2? Also, I started reading through the release notes. I really don't like the fact that you cannot uninstalll SP2.

Exchange 2007 service packs are not a simple additional upgrade. They actually remove Exchange and reinstall it. The service pack is the complete binary - you can install a new server using the SP2 download files. Therefore there are no uninstall options - that was the case with SP1 as well.

The service pack setup should prep the domain for you - it has in all of the sites I have done the installation on. If it is telling you to prep the domain manually it would sound like something isn't correct with your lab.

hmmm. OK. Sounds like a big upgrade. Let me ask you this. Is it ok to have a mixed environment of SP1 and SP2.? My current situation is I have two Hub/CAS servers and 3 CCR Clusters all runnings on Windows 2003 and Exchange SP1, Rollup 4. I am building out three new Clusters which will run on 2008 and it would be a good time to install the SP2 version. I'll be doing a migration of mailboxes from the old Clusters to the new ones and decommissioning the old ones.

Well, not sure why  I had to, but I took the installation messages advice and ran setup.com /prepareAD in my root Domain using a privledged account. That ran fine. I then was able to install SP2 on my CAS/Hub transport server and I am sure my mailbox servers will be ok also. I used an account with schema admins and enterprise admins rights initially on my CAS server but I guess because the schema master is in another Domain (root), it would not work even with a privledged account. I had to run the /prepareAD in the root on the schema master. Looking back, the installation was telling me this all along. I under estimated the complexity of this SP. There are hundreds of schema changes so its not just an upgrade of binaries which is why its not uninstallable. Anyway, lesson learned to anyone that has to do this. If your schema master is in a different Domain from your Exchange, you may need to run setup /prepareAD on the schema master before attempting the install. Kind of like what you did when you installed your first instance of Exchange 2007.

There are a lot of changes because this service pack introduces support for a mixed Exchange 2007/ 2010 environment.

You can mix versions, but the cluster should be on the same version as soon as possible, and CAS must be on the same or HIGHER as the mailbox server. The usual path is the mailbox servers are last.

osiexchange,

While installing exchange 2007 sp2, schema is updated. So, you need to run the setup with an account that has Schema rights and Enterprise/Domain Admin rights. The account should also have local admin rights on the exchange server (I guess domain admins will have it).

Setup will extend the schema for you automatically, if you are using a proper account. If not, you can run it manually as well. You can ONLY use command line to upgrade a CCR cluster to SP2.
