Question

Exchange 2007 does NOT move disabled mailboxes to the Disconnected Mailboxes folder

Asked by: usableit

Migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.  Running Mailboxes in a CCR config.

When I Disable a mailbox, the mailbox is completed removed.  This is true of a 'user mailbox' or 'linked mailbx'.

User account still exists in AD (and was disabled at time of migration).

What is your Mailbox retention period? Is it at default 30 days?

Get-MailboxDatabase | fl *rete*

Look for Mailbox Retention

If it is at 0, then that is why. The mailbox will not be stored in the dumpster.

Originally, it was at 30 days.  I changed that value to 180 days.

Also, if I try to create a NEW mailbox and associate with that user account, that user account is NOT available to attach the new mailbox to.

This is a common problem. Use the clean-mailboxdatabase commandlet to fix the problem. Google the command and you'll find the correct syntax.

Yes, try the Clean-MailboxDatabase.

Note that when you create a NEW mailbox (your last comment), you are actually creating a mailbox enabled user. If you select Existing you will only be presented with non-mailbox enabled users.

Check that the account you wish to create a new mailbox for / connect the existing mailbox is MAIL Disabled. To do this, type this command:

get-user | where {$_.samaccountname -eq '<USERNAME>' | fl *type

This should say User, not MailboxUser

command appears to have executed properly.
Nothing in Disconnected Mailbox.

Talk me through the migration process, did you move Disabled users to 2007 or Mail enabled accounts?

Is the Exchange 2003 server still in operation?

If you create a NEW Mailbox user / Send a couple of emails to the account / Disable  - Does this show in Disconnected Mailboxes?

Yes, exchange 2003 is still active, but not for much longer.

After installation of Exchange, I replicated the public folders.
I then began moving mailboxes.  I have a 500+ GB datastore, so it took awhile.

I moved ALL mailboxes, including disabled users.
I also had to convert some Resource Mailboxes to Room type (successful).

a few of the disabled mailboxes reflected 'linked', but not many.  I would say 10%.

So these are disconnected mailboxes across all your Mailbox databases.

Is this list incomplete?

Shaun

by: usableitPosted on 2009-09-02 at 11:31:30ID: 25244068

this list is not showing up in the Management Console

by: usableitPosted on 2009-09-02 at 11:31:53ID: 25244072

same server I ran the command line on

by: shauncroucherPosted on 2009-09-02 at 11:32:02ID: 25244076

If you do not see this list in your Disconnected Mailboxes view in Exchange Management Console, can you check you don't have a Filter setup? In disconnected mailbox, it should just have Create Filter, and no actual filter.

I would advise closing the EMC, and reopening.

Oh man, STUPID>>>>>>

I did not realize that I had to connect the Disconnected Mailbox TO my exchanger server....

by: usableitPosted on 2009-09-02 at 11:34:16ID: 31623882

Demonstrated that the mailboxes WERE there

by: shauncroucherPosted on 2009-09-02 at 11:35:08ID: 25244104

Ah I see. Well got there in the end.

Yes, this is a change in Exchange 2007, instead of the Disconnect icon over the mailbox, they are placed in Disconnected Mailboxes.
