Question

Exchange 2003 with multiple domains and public IP Addresses

Asked by: dhlemasurier

We have 2 domain names that share an Exchnage 2003 server, (i.e. dom1.com and dom2.com).  I want to setup one domain to route SMTP traffic on one public IP address/MX record (i.e. 1.2.3.4) and the scond to route on public IP/MX record (i.e. 1.2.3.5).  I want to do ths becuase we are using one of the domain names to send bulk email (not spam) to our customers.  The other domain is used strictly for typicall buisness email.  I have seen several questions about  this and the experts recomend using the same public IP address/MX record for multiple domains.  The issue with this solution is that the public IP adress has/can be blacklisted and ultiamatly afftect the important business email.  I want the "biulk" domain assocaited with a different Public IP address. Many of the experts have suggested that you cannot have Exchange specify which  IP address to send out on. I have setup my firewall with a  1to1 NAT to route the incoming SMTP pubilc IP traffc to two different internal private IP addresses, both on the Exchnage server.  I am looking for a way to setup Exchange to accept the SMTP traffic indpendently and send email out the correct public IP address.  Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated.

Ehat you are trying to use is virtually impossible without the use of some ADVANCED FIREWALL DEVICE which can analyse the outgoing traffic and route it via 2 different routers or networks.
The other solution you could try is in this post by PACIB - http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/Q_24660648.html

No doubt it is going to be complex

One way to do it (assuming you have the extra public IP address) is to have emails for the bulk email domain go through a "Smart Host", which can be as simple as just an "SMTP virtual server" on another server.  Not too difficult, as long as your firewall is capable of handling it.  Basically, when port 25 traffic is coming from the normal server, let the router make it look like it is comng from one public IP address.  When port 25 traffic is coming from the smart host, make it look like another public IP address.  As long as you have a decent router (not consumer-grade), it's possible.

Emails outbound cannot be routed by internal domain - they can only be routed by outbound domain so you cannot achieve what you want to I'm afraid.

If you had separate servers on separate domains and separate internet connections, then there would not be a problem.

I do have a commercial grade router, it is a Watchguard Core series.  The problem with the smart host solution is that I cannot assign a PTR record to the smart host IP for my domain so I am assuming the Reverse DNS would fail, right?.  Also, how would I ge tthe "bulk" domain to send out the separate virtula smarthost and What I was thinking was a way to setup 2 SMTP virtual servrs or connectors and have the email for the "bulk" domain sent by that virtual server which would be setup on a seprate internal IP and ultimatly sent by my router out the separte public IP

Any other input?

Irresepctive of what router you have, the SMTP connectors are only able to route mail based on the outbound mail domain.  You cannot ask Exchange to send mail based on the sending domain name down one particular connector or another.

I guess the only way you are going to get around this is to add another exchange server, you could add it into the existing exchange organisation and then seperate it using routing groups and seperate SMTP connectors per routing group.  This would allow users contained on one server/routing group to send mail via one SMTP connector.

You may be able to achieve it with a single Exchange 2007 server using subscriptions.

It certainly is not possible on a single exchange 2003 server.

You could also consider running a FREE  MAILSERVER like Exchange. Have a look at this product called "MAIN ENABLE". You can run it on an old XP box.

I guess it all depends on how your users are setup and how the e-mail will be presented?
You can setup an e-mail server on a basic Windows 2003 server as it's included but you still have the problem of routing SMTP traffic to 2 different internal IP addresses.

This is find if you have 2 external IP addresses and your MX records are setup correctly to corolate with these but it's not something I would want to try.

Your better off using a smarthost that is setup to cater for this sort of bulk mailing that way you don't have to worry about it, this would also eliminate the need for multiple MX records and IP routing etc etc.

Let them do all the work for you, it might cost but it will be worth it in the long run!

OK assumig I setup another server and I use a smart host, isn't the PTR lookup going to fail?  Do I point the PTR to the smart hosts IP address?
