The msexchange.org link tells you to configure OWA using the FE serve, thats why the error message..
No you can run Exchange OWA on a stand alone server as well, you need a FE server for various means the most widely used scenario is if you have multiple BE servers and you want users to have a single point of contact for OWA and other Exchange related traffic you implement a FE server, that proxy's the requests coming from the Internet to the BE servers...

You cannot open OWA because your SSL certificate pointed to old Server.
So you need to create a New CNAME record in Internal DNS like mail.abc.com
And after create a CNAME checked your nslookup.
