Question

Blocking Consumer E-mail via EAS

Asked by: rosederekj

I have an EAS policy that is applying without issue, and the box for allow consumer e-mail is NOT checked.  Yet, people can setup personal e-mail accounts.  I would like only their default SMTP account to be allowed to run on the phone.  Mostly they are HTC Ozone through Verizon with WM6.1, and also iPhones.

Is this possible?  Exchange 2007 SP2

Have you applied the EAS to Mailboxes (or are they all set defaulted?)

Check here for policy in use on mailboxes:

I modified the default policy and that is the one that applies.  I know the policy itself is applying because I enforced a 15 minute timeout, and the 4 digit pin.

Just a thought...

The only thing you can do, I think, is to require authentication for the user to send mails (which is what the SMTP service does). But there's probably nothing you can do to stop me from setting up, on my phone, my own email, except by having a company policy (assuming the devices are your phones) -- and even then, I'm not sure you could stop them from using your SMTP service.

As it is, there's nothing stopping a gmail user (for example) from setting up his gmail account on his phone, using gmail's SMTP service.

I'm not so much concerned with the SMTP to the exchange server because I think I can control that by disabling pop on the user level.  My concern, as you pointed out, is the setup of a personal account like GMAIL for instance.

MS references a "Consumer E-mail" section in the EAS policy, which was my understanding to serve this purpose but it doesn't appear to be working.  I'm wondering if anyone has used this before?
