Question

Can I restore a user emails on a different SBS uisng NTBackup

Asked by: smith9069

By accident, I deleted a user from SBS 2003 Exchange. I do have a good NTBackup.  Is it possible to restore the user emails on my lab server instead of production server? If yes, how?

Thank you.

If you deleted the user the mailbox won't be deleted st away. Its just going to have a red cross.create a new AD account and go ESM right click on the deleted mailbox and attach to the new user.Alternatively use RSG and exmerge to recover the mailbox.

I have purged the deleted user from the Exchange. I will try Method 3: Restore a Mailbox from Backup to a Recovery Server and will post back with the result. Thanks.

Finally, I restored the whole exchange data to a recovery server. I can mount the mailbox store and I can see all users including the mailbox I want to restore. However, Microsoft "how to use Exmerge" talks about moving the restored back to the production server. Can I restored the mailbox in the recovery server without doing any thing in the production server?

I have tried to use emerge. I have only two users who were created in the recovery server and don't see the user I want to restore. The screenshots can be found here: http://www.howtonetworking.com/email/exmerge11.html

Thank you.

My guess is that you have used a recent exchange backup which didn't have the user you deleted.Go back to a backup to which you think would have the deleted user. With exmerg you can't export a mailbox to a pst file and import a pst file to a mailbox.

by: smith9069Posted on 2009-09-25 at 05:53:34ID: 25422417

No, no. As I said the restored data does have the user and "I can see all users including the mailbox I want to restore" in the Mailbox Store. For example, the user name is Chuck. You can see him in the first screenshot in the link: http://www.howtonetworking.com/email/exmerge11.html.

The second screenshot show only two users: bob lin and administartor who were created when I installed the recovery server.

The question is how to read the restored mailbox from the recovery server. Or do I need to restore the System State also in the recovery server so that I have the user Chuck to read the email?

Thank you for the link, ahmdabdelbaset. I am almost tehre. The problem I have is hat I don't see the new user I just created when I click Reconnect. The new user I created can send and receive email, but I can't see any active users. The only users I can see are administrator template, mobile template and they are disabled. Can someone give more details?

I posted two screenshots in this link: http://www.chicagotech.net/exchange/restoreemail1.html

The first screnshot  shows I can see all restored mailbox and the new user I just created. For example, the mailbox I want to restore is talk... and teh new user I created is test1.

The second screenshot shows the test1 is not listed in the "Select a new user for this mailbox". Why?

Run clean up .

by: mboppePosted on 2009-09-27 at 16:57:21ID: 25436013

Because Test1 has already a mailbox attached. You need to create a test user account with out a mailbox.

Or

Go to ADUC right click on test1 and select exchange tasks and remove just the mailbox. Then run a cleanup and try attaching the mailbox.
