Question

Exchange Server 2003 and Resource Scheduling

Asked by: bwjriley

Resource Scheduling, a calendar feature in Outlook 2003/Exchange Server 2003, was brought to my attention by one of my co-workers.  I have worked a bit with this, but have yet to get it fully active.  When a user goes to use this feature, a message stating that there is a configuration error on the server contact your network administrator for further assistance appears..  I am the network administrator, and I haven't been able to figure this out.  Does any one on this site have experience with this feature and would you be so kind as to point me to a white paper on how to enable this feature or email directions on what needs to be done on the Exchange Server to enable this feature.

Thanks,
JRiley

Im not sure but are you following these steps?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291617/en-us

What you do is basically create a domain user called 'conference room 1' and another user called 'conference room 2', ect..... Then follow the instruction above

So then the 'conference room 1' resource account automatically accepts a scheduled meeting is request.....and deny's if it's already booked for the time.

I hope this helps.

The steps included in this response have been done.  The problem ocurrs when clicking on the Resource Scheduling button after the user id has been created.  The message states that settings on the Exchange Server need to be configures.  Check with the network supervisor.

So, any suggestions about the Exchange Server configuration?  Does some sort of Exchange Add-on Kit need to be installed?

A screen shot of the error will be more helpful.

Also following is an excellent msexchange article which explains Booking Resources with Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook System 2003. You can refer the part Email Accounts to get more details on Resource Scheduling.

I can do all this, but the server setup is the issue.  Does any one have experience with the server side?  I have read a bit about an Exchange Server Resource Kit.  Does any one have knowledge of this?

Thanks,
JRiley

Why Exchange Server Resource Kit??

it's a simple setup for resource mailbox. Just create an account and enable the Automatic accept by logging in to the resource mailbox using outlook . While sending meeting request to this resource mailbox you need to mark it a resource as shown in Figure 7: Booking Resources automatically.

Thats how I did it for my conference rooms and it worked like a charm. And that page that you posted is actualy the same one that I followed.

Is this happening for all users? If you are using cached mode can you remove the cached mode and check whether you are getting the same error?

Yes, all users.  I just disabled Cache Mode and the same message appeared.

Do you have multiple servers or is it a single server environment?

Check Whether a Server Running Exchange Server Contains a Replica of the Free/Busy System Folder for the Administrative Group

http://technet.microsoft.com/hi-in/library/aa996676(en-us,EXCHG.65).aspx

Also run ExBPA on server and see if the result contain any errors.

by: bwjrileyPosted on 2009-10-22 at 07:52:44ID: 25634932

Just a single Exchange Server.

by: SubsunPosted on 2009-10-22 at 08:23:23ID: 25635278

Ok, Check the Replica of the Free/Busy folder and provide details of the ExBPA result.

by: bwjrileyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 11:32:51ID: 25753020

I ran EXbpa--no messages relating to my problem.  The is still the message that something has to be done on the server itself.

So, any thoughts out there?????

by: SubsunPosted on 2009-11-06 at 08:16:09ID: 25760435

DId you check the replica tab of the public folder does it list the exchange server?

by: bwjrileyPosted on 2009-11-06 at 08:32:45ID: 25760582

I cried uncle and paid for help.  My solution is in progress and is summarized below.

Hi John,

It looks like a recent update may have broken adsiedit.  The problem with your server is the missing schedule/free/busy public folder.  The way we fix it is by regenerating the public folders with a new guid and pointing the folders to the correct server (instead of the one that was deleted).

This is the exact method:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb331972.aspx

But, adsiedit is failing to update the HEX values.  It does this on both of your DCs and my DC as well which leads me to believe its a MS problem.  I hope so because I would LOVE to find a problem that actually requires a hotfix.

I have a ticket with MS open on this and will update you ASAP.
