Question

Exchange 2003 Mailbox Size limit / Propogate across servers

Asked by: estanton

I am in the middle of an exhange 2003 migrations. Just moving to a new machine. I have a user that is getting the error in outlook " THe message store has reached its maximum size....." I looked at the user in AD and sure enough he was over the limit. I bumped it up in AD to alleviate the problem, but it did not work. This has something to do with the migration I am sure. I currently have two exchange servers running. The new one has all the mailboxes on it, and I am getting ready to move all the unique services over to the new one and demote the old one.

How do I get exchange to recognize that I change the mailbox size limit in AD. I have rebooted the users machine and restarted the smtp services on both servers.

mailbox limits are per user and per server - with whatever is smallest being the limit.
each server can have different limits
you need to adjust on the mailbox store of the new server

I don't understand. I adjusted the per server limit through the registy setting on both server. The mailbox store is not over the limit. This user is the only one who is having problems.

right click on mailbox store (on the second server)
properties
limits
storage limits
and check the settings

i assume the new server is Service pack 2 - and the registry settings you are referring to are for the total store size limit.

by: estantonPosted on 2009-10-08 at 08:55:49ID: 25526871

Nothing is checked on the limits tab for the Information store on the new server. There are other users with much bigger mailboxes that are not having problems. Each user has different size limits.

has the total message store size limit been increased - as per service pack 2 and registry

by: estantonPosted on 2009-10-08 at 09:10:20ID: 25527017

Yes

by: MesthaPosted on 2009-10-08 at 09:16:37ID: 25527095

If you have changed the size of the user's mailbox limit, the change is not immediate. It can take two hours before Exchange will recognise the change due to the way that it caches settings. Nothing to do with the database.

Do you know of any way to force an update.

Restart the information store. That will kick everyone out of Exchange though.
