HDS 9585 Performance Metrics

I have inherited a network using an older HDS 9585 SAN.  The current sys admin says that it is performing "fine" but I'd like to have numbers to validate this opinion.

(1)  What do I measure to determine SAN performance?
(2)  What tools are available for the HDS 9585 to get these metrics?
(3)  What should I expect acceptable performance to look like?

How does any of these question need to deal witht the tag "Exchange Email Server", you are looking at measuring perforamance of SAN

(1)  What do I measure to determine SAN performance?
(2)  What tools are available for the HDS 9585 to get these metrics?
(3)  What should I expect acceptable performance to look like?

Please remove the tag for Exchange Server.

(1)  What do I measure to determine SAN performance?
The most obvious measure of how well the array is handling the workload is response time. Queue depths also give a good indication of how hard the disk is working

(2)  What tools are available for the HDS 9585 to get these metrics?
HDS Hi Command will tell you what the array is up to, but measuring performance at the host OS is the best place to start. Open perfmon, go to PhysicalDisk, select Current Disk Queue Length, % Disk Time and Disk Transfers/sec. You can then calculate Disk Service time = % Disk Time / Disk transfers/sec. Disk Transfers/sec will give you the IOPS the host is generating.

(3)  What should I expect acceptable performance to look like?
Sub 20mS repsonse times are (just) acceptable, But I'd be looking for sub 10mS if possible
