Why do you want to use a POP3 connector? Any reason why you can't use Exchange as it was designed - SMTP delivery.

I agree with Simon that it is best to use smtp but if you need a pop3 connector the following is a very good free one.

You would prefer to have the system crippled in operation just in case something bad happens, rather than use the product as it was designed, uncrippled and have other methods to collect your email?

Simon.
Its all just opinions at the end of the day however I wonder why SBS comes with a pop3 connector if it carries with it so much danger.....
I have personally supported many exchange envirionments that use pop3 connectors and cannot honestly remember having a serious issue with any of them. My advise would be go right ahead and dont worry about it however I would suggest that you use one of the more respected pop3 connector products.

The POP3 connector is supplied with SBS for one reason only - to assist with the migration from an ISP based POP3 system to SMTP delivery.
Doesn't matter which POP3 connector you use, they all have the same problem with BCC messages.
There are NO good reasons to use the POP3 connector. Just because you have supported many environments using them doesn't mean it was a good idea.

Your welcome to your opinion Simon, as I am. One very good reason for using a pop3 connector is for those who prefer the added security of closing port 25 inbound. There are many companies following that very practice. I have no more to say on this other than to answer the question at hand.

Using a pop3 mailbox as a backup route for email can be a useful addition to an exchange server. The primary MX record points to the Exchange Server and the secondary MX record points to the pop3 mailbox. When the Exchange server is unavailable mail will be delivered to the pop3 mailbox . During normal operations any mail that finds its way into the pop3 mailbox will be collected by a pop3 connector that passes the mail to Exchange for distribution to recipients as if it arrived via the SMTP route. This has several plus points. If the exchange server is unavailable mail can be collected by connecting a mail client to the mailbox and you can carry on working whereas mail would otherwise be queued on remote mailservers and stuck in the retry queue until it can be delivered to your server or the retry interval expires and the mail is NDRed as non deliverable. Also when the mail server is brought back online following an outage mail is delivered to recipients as quickly as it can be collected from the pop3 mailbox rather than having to wait for remote mailservers to retry their queue. The main drawback is Spam as Spammers tend to target backup mail routes like this as they believe the Spam defences will not be as good as on the primary route.
