Question

MS Exchange Replication

Asked by: MSLCNS

Can anyone give me some advice on how or if it is possible to run 2 exchange servers side by side within the same network  and subnet in a single site for fail over abilities

I would like to if possible replicate one exchange server to another so that if one server fails all the mailboxes and data are accessible

Could some please help me and let me know if it is possible and how to go about this setup

Thanks

You can go for a High Availability Solution,

1) Veritas Cluster + Veritas Volume Manager..
2) OR Microsoft Cluster (Would cost you lot less than Veritas Cluster)

If you are looking to have something, without any extra cost and you are ready for some manual work, then...

Build Server1 Exchange Server and clone the server.. And shutdown the Cloned Exchange Server.... when Your Exchange Server fails... Move the SAN Cable Manually to the Cloned Server, (And make sure you shutdown the server 1st which is having issue...)...

Just to remind, The Reason why i say Clone is, You cannot install 2 Physical Servers with Same Name or same anything... So, its easy to build 1 Server and clone it., and shutdown the orginal server, if any issue is encountered and start the clone ....with the Same SAN Cable Connected...

Talk to your Storage (SAN) Guy, and he will add 2 paths to your SAN... 1 From the Orginal Server and 1 from the Clone... So that, any moment...you can shutdown Orginal Server, and start the clone and see the SAN ... Just fine as the orginal server

Hey  shaker after clone any changes made in orginal server wont rflect in cloned server then how we can use it as standby?mean mailbox created after clone etc....

Hi Narendra,

Mailbox is Created in AD (Out of our Concern here), and The Mailbox is stored in Exchange Database  (SAN)... Why would i even Bother about it...when i connect the SAN with the Upto minute data to the Clone Exchange..

Changes to Exchange Environment are again stored in AD, So.. (This one is out of concern too)

And Yes, If you are talking about You created a File in the Orginal ExChange Server's desktop... and you want it on the clone... you obviously wont see it in the clone.

Version of Exchange involved here would help.
Although if it is Exchange 2003 I would suggest moving to Exchange 2007 and using CCR. Clustering on Exchange 2003 is painful.

Cloning an Exchange server is not something I would even consider. The clone would be out of date about 10 seconds after it has been finished, even if you are storing all of the data outside of the server that was cloned.

The simple rule is that you do not get anything close to live failover for free. The longer you can be without the system the cheaper it is.

ah,
1st thing 1st... Clone is a Proven Solution. And Next, Yes... Its True, that HA solutions cost work in the formula of

Less the Downtime = More Costly the Solution
More the downtime affordable = Less the cost of Solution.

I have helped my friend Personaly use a Clone Exchange Server Which was Ghosted... And Kept that Clone Away from Network.. And As in the Real Server fails. He connects the SAN cable to Clone (Before that he shuts down the real one)..

This solution Works fine for him...
Cluster Node is a Dummy node too, when a Exhange FailOvers... The SAN Volunmes are mounted in the Node and All the Services are started in the node, and exchange works from the New node..

what is differnet from Cluster and clone is,

1. In cluster Exchange IP address & Virtual name is moved to the new node.
2. Then SAN Volumes are mounted
3. all the Exchange Services are started, and exchange becomes funtional

in a clone, Just connect the SAN and start the machine, The name & IP are already in place...

I'm here to learn new things too, So ... this is not a argument, just trying to see...why it doesnt make sense... And want to understand the season, why you guys think so...

PS: on the last line, read season as Reason. :-)

thanks for your comments but it kinda over the top going for a san, does anyone know how well CCR (Continuous Cluster Replication) for exchange 07 works and also do the servers themselves need to be in a cluster thanks

by: MesthaPosted on 2009-11-05 at 05:12:14ID: 25749002

CCR requires the clustering technologies. Therefore you need Enterprise edition of both Windows and Exchange.
