Question

Exchange 2007 cannot send external emails w/ Exchange 2003

Asked by: mskyy

I have an existing Exchange 2003 environment and I installed exchange 2007 standard on server 2003 x64 R2.  I also have a edge server on a server 2003 x64 R2 on a workgroup outside my domain.  Both exchange servers have sp2 installed.
Both the exchange 03 & 07 servers can send email back and forth to each other fine.  I receive outside emails to my existing 03 and new 07 mailboxes fine but I cannot send any external emails from 07 mailboxes.  I can send externally from 03 mailboxes fine (which makes me believe everything is trying to send out of 03 instead of 07).  I am not great at understanding all the configurations for making connectors but I did check the message tracker in 07 and it only shows email going to the 03 mailboxes and does not even show any emails I tried to send out to external mail (aol, yahoo).  What I would like to do is get all mail routing out of 07 and keep the 03 & 07 talking until I can get all transitions complete.  Then I will remove the 03 server.  I only have one 03 exchange server.  I have read so many different articles on the net I believe I am completely confused now.  Thanks for your help!

Have you set up a send connector under transports on your 2007 server?

by: mskyyPosted on 2009-10-23 at 13:12:09ID: 25648085

I have 3 send connectors on my HT.  One is the connector 07 made on install to talk to 03, the other two are edgesyncs (default first site name to internet & inbound to default first site name)

Microsoft best practices say you need to remove the send connector from exchange 2003 box and use the edge server to send and receive messages form the internet.
Do the following:-
From edge server run nslookup
set type=mx
yahoo.com
copy the IP address then telnet <ip>port 25 you should be able to that ,IF NOT you have a firewall issue between edge servers and the inernet.

I ran the nslookup and it is pointing to my internal GC as the default server (which is also my dns and 03 exchange server).  I tried to telnet from the edge server to the mail yahoo ip and it said it could not open connection to the host on port 23.  I made sure telnet was allowed out through the firewall and same result. When I ran nslookup, should it be looking back to my internal dns server?

Edge Servers should be able to see external DNS servers and the telnet on port 25 should be successful to be able to send /receive mails from the edge servers.

I beleive you need to check the access list on the external firewall between internet and edge servers.

I figured out what was wrong.  Somehow (probably between all the articles I was reading) the server listed under the Internet send connector was pointing to my edge server instead of my HT.  Once I changed this, email started flowing fine.  Thanks for your suggestions.
