As long as you make sure that you do a migration and not an in-place upgrade then you will be fine. I've had so many problems with the in-place upgrade and had to restore from backup and re-do, but the migration process between two servers is typically very successful.

Have a quick look at this link to start: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124008.aspx

So wont matter if its in a new domain.  Moving to all new servers as well so think that will simplify.

If you are going across to a new domain, then you cannot just pick the Exchange store and move it.
You either have to do a cross forest migration (if the source is at the right versions) or you will have to extract the information out and move it via PST files.

Moving it it with .pst files, seems to mean they would have to be all downloaded on a user by user basis?

For the cross forest migration, do you mean the versions on the OS level?

You can extract mailbox content to PST files using tools. Exmerge on Exchange 2003 and then import-mailbox on Exchange 2007.

Cross Forest migration requires Exchange and the domain to be at a certain level.

How does exmerge work, can you extract centrally and re-import centrally as well?

by: MesthaPosted on 2009-11-05 at 05:08:41ID: 25748980

Exmerge is for Exchange 2003, and allows all mailboxes to be exported from a single point. I usually use a workstation with an account with the relevant tools and space.

For importing, you need to use import-mailbox, not exmerge. While exmerge will work, getting it to work can be troublesome.

Great, thanks.  Does this process take a long time?  Would like the transition to be as fast as possible.
