I changed it. It was our mail server.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI am running Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 SP2.
I currently have an external contacts distribution list in our organization with 17 external emails in it.
This list was created several months ago, and users were able to email to it just fine.
Just recently one user sent an email to this list, and got the following NDR.
Subject: I Web Installations
Sent: 10/19/2009 2:29 PM
The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:
May ltyrk (site 2 MA) on 10/21/2009 2:40 PM
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or contact your administrator.
<smtp.mail.com#4.4.7>
Here is what has changed.
I currently created AD accounts for each of these external reps, and they also had there external email address in the AD account. So, there was two objects in AD with the same email.
Could this of been the cause? I removed the email address from the AD account, and removed them from the distribution group.
Also in the contact on the email addresses tab, should i remove the X400,CCMAIl,MS and just leave the SMTP address in there?

You shouldn't have CCMAIL , MSMAIL addresses in there. That sounds like you have those components installed on the machine which you almost certainly don't need. I would suggest removing it.
If you had two objects in the domain with the same address then it can cause a problem.
On the contacts the external address should be the default address, not the internal address. I would leave the X.400 address in place through.

smtp.mail.com is the server that generated the error. Did you change the error so that we didn't see your company information, or is that exactly how it was listed? If it's how it was listed, the error looks specific to the user's Outlook. They must have additional mail accounts beyond Exchange configured to have it say that.
Regardless, a quick search on MS showed me this:
Numeric Code: 4.4.7
Possible Cause: The message in the queue has expired. The sending server tried to relay or deliver the message, but the action was not completed before the message expiration time occurred. This NDR may also indicate that a message header limit has been reached on a remote server or that some other protocol timeout occurred during communication with the remote server.
Troubleshooting: This code typically indicates an issue on the receiving server. Verify the validity of the recipient address, and verify that the receiving server is configured to receive messages correctly. You may have to reduce the number of recipients in the header of the message for the host that you are receiving this NDR from. If you resend the message, it is placed in the queue again. If the receiving server is on line, the message is delivered.
