Question

Is it possible to configure Journeling on an Exchange 2003 Server that is being used as an SMTP relay Server?

Asked by: SteveJ-007

Hi Everyone,
I am in the process of trying to migrate mailboxes to a web based mail from Exchange 2003 but I would also like to continue using Journaling to archive all mail on another existing Exchange Server.

Unfortunately the web based mail solution does not have any journaling capability but it does have the option to specify the an outbound SMTP Gateway server.

I was wondering if there was any way to configure the exchange server that I was originally using to store the Journaling mailbox to be a SMTP Relay Server and to archive all of the emails that are relayed through this server.

I.E is it possible to route all of my emails going out of my web based email through the Exchange server and to have the Exchange Server archive all of the emails that it is relaying?

Any assistance in helping me clarify whether or not this is possible would be most appreciated.

You will ONLY be able to Journal e-mail going to the Internet and e-mail comming from the Internet.
The e-mails that are routed internally will bypass this "Relay" and therefore not be Journaled.

Why did you stop using Exchange?

Hi BAAAASS,
Thanks for your response,
We had to move away from exchange to reduce admin costs etc  it may however still be desirable to set up the archiving that you have described.

Could you please advise how it is possible to achieve the level of archiving that you have described?
do you have to set up archiving on the virtual server level?

Any further assistance would be most appreciated

The mail flow has to be configured as follows:
Internet > Exchange > New Mail Server
New Mail Server > Exchange > Internet

Exchange has to be configured as follows:
On the Exchange Database, Right Click, Properties, Enable Journaling, Select a Journal Mailbox (on Exchange)

Are you trying to journal the messages which is relaying through the server?

FYI, in Exchange 2003 Journaling is enabled @database level, also the server will only journal messages which is send and received by the mailboxes hosted in the database. If the mailboxes not hosted on the exchange server then it will not work. In exchange 2007 it is possible to journal all messages passed through a HUB transport server using the transport rule or journaling agent feature.

Hi Subsun,
Thanks for your response,
I am indeed trying to journal all the messages that are being relayed through the server. From your response it looks like it is not currently possible to achieve this with exchange 2003 without having the mailboxes located on the relaying exchange 2003 server.

Would it be possible however to configure an exchange 2007 server and configure it as a hub transport server and then have it journal all the messages that are passed through it to the journal mailbox that I i am currently using located on the 2003 Exchange server and then configure my webmail to have an smtp gateway of the Hub transport server and then forward all outbound mail through this server?

Is it possible for a 2003 Exchange server and a 2007 Exchange server to both exist in the same environment like this?

Would I also need to configure an 2007 Edge transport server?

Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated

It is possible to configure coexistence for exchange 2003 and 2007, EDGE is not required in this scenario, but if you are going to use Exchange 2k7 only for journaling then it is going to be an expensive solution.
