Question

Random users unable to login to exchange 2007 using outlook

Asked by: Nordicit

Hi all!

I'm currently having this problem of users being unable to login to their exchange mailboxes. This happens to random users at different times of the day without any clear pattern.

The outlook will show, at the bottom right, Work Offline. And if we uncheck it, it will prompt for user credentials to login. It will continue to prompt even after entering the correct credentials

In the event logs, the only error that is shown as below:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      MSExchangeTransport
Event Category:      TransportService
Event ID:      12014
Date:            05/11/2009
Time:            9:48:27 AM
User:            N/A
Computer:      COY-EX01
Description:
Microsoft Exchange couldn't find a certificate that contains the domain name coy-ex01.coy.com.sg in the personal store on the local computer. Therefore, it is unable to support the STARTTLS SMTP verb for the connector SMTP with a FQDN parameter of coy-ex01.coy.com.sg. If the connector's FQDN is not specified, the computer's FQDN is used. Verify the connector configuration and the installed certificates to make sure that there is a certificate with a domain name for that FQDN. If this certificate exists, run Enable-ExchangeCertificate -Services SMTP to make sure that the Microsoft Exchange Transport service has access to the certificate key.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I've used this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555855 but still no luck.

- we're running exchange 2007 on Windows Server 03 R2 SP2

Don't know if the error below is related to the loggin issues so please! Any help is appreciated. :)

Did you verify that the FQDN was populated with the Server Name ??
Do you see any 9646 event ID's in the App logs on the Mailbox server ??
Because if there is issue with SMTP connector or something all users should be affected ideally not one or more and not all .....
Run the command Get-ExchangeCertificates and check if you see the certificate .....
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124950.aspx
What if the user at that same time tries to login through OWA ??

The error that you have posted is not related to Outlook connectivity.
It is basically saying that the FQDN on the connector doesn't match an FQDN on your SSL certificate. If you haven't changed the self signed certificate for a SAN/UC certificate then you will get those errors.

Outlook 2007 makes regular calls to autodiscover. Therefore if that isn't configured correctly then it can cause problems. Use the Connection tool (right click on Outlook icon in system tray while holding CTRL, choose Connection Status) to see what Outlook is connecting to.

leakim971: using the BPA, the health check shows up this.  (pls refer to attached image)

Rancy: there was actually. ID 9646 errors but it stopped after 2 more instances. its not showing up anymore.

Rancy & Mestha: in the exchange shell, running the
Get-ReceiveConnector | FL name, fqdn, objectClass
gives me the Fqdn: coy-ex01.coydomain.com

however, running the
Get-SendConnector | FL name, fqdn, objectClass
gives me the Fqdn: coy-ex01.coydomain.com.sg

the Get-ExchangeCertificate | FL *
gives me coy-ex01.coydomain.com, and has no mention of the .sg fqdn anywhere.

could this be the issue?
*however, pls note that the coy sends and recieves mails using the .sg prefix*
im worried if we change fqdn for the smtp connector, would the server functionality get affected.

Mestha: i will check the outlook using the connection tool, will update you again.

Thanks to all for the help so far!

As Exchange BPA say it, you should modify the paging size to be equal to your physical memory.

Another thing why have you so much paging size ? 15368 / 6142 = 2.5
