Question

Exchange 2003 DB limit

Asked by: MyrtW

We have MS Exchange 2003 std SP2 running on a Win2003 domain. Recently messages have appeared in the application log saying we are running close to our database limit of 75 GB. I am confused because when I look at our database files (mdb, stm) they are a little less that 30 GB.

I am double concerned because this is causing dismounting of our stores and interfering with our backups (I think). I really don't want to do an offline defrag unless that is the only way to correct this issue.

What is Exchange doing and what are my options?

Check out this discussion - http://www.mrtweak.com/exchange-server/registry-tweak-to-set-a-75gb-store-limit-on-exchange-2003-standard-sp2/

Another option would be to upgrade to Enterprise Edition, which should be able to be done in place with Exchange 2003.

Hello

I had this problem a few months ago.
Are you doing a full backup of the exchange server?

To fix this you can get people to lower there mailbox size.

You can also change the size limit of the database.
This will show you how to do it.

What, EXACTLY do the messages state?  Do they actually state the number 75 or are they more generic that you are approaching the limit?  Is it possible you (another admin/prior admin) simply set the information store limit to 30 instead of 75?  (The limit is customizable up to 75 GB).

by: MyrtWPosted on 2009-11-04 at 19:56:22ID: 25746643

How can I determine the present limit? The ap message says 75GB but it may be smaller.

by: hutnorPosted on 2009-11-04 at 20:01:29ID: 25746670

In the event viewer - If you find the error message it will tell you what the limit is set at.

Or

In regedit locate

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\<Servername>\Private-GUID
Database Size Limit in Gb = ??

Look when the Online maintenance rubns every morning between 1-5AM it checks the Logical size of the database that we see in the Windows Explorer (Also do you mean that the size of .edb and .stm file collectively is just 30Gb??) .....
1. Whsat is the size of .edba nd .stm for both Mailbox and Public Database ??
2. What does the Registry value shows as
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\<Servername>\Private-GUID ----- Database Size Limit in Gb = ?? (Decimal)
3. Check the event App logs for event id 1221 for free space in the database.
4. If you want to check the total free space you might have to add the free space shown in the event ID's but never accurate as its day based and some might be filled or not.
5. 2 things
a. either upgrade to Enterprise for no limit would cost you more or else do a Offline defrag on weekends to get the limit down.
But again if you are planning to get down we might need to have a look at many things to get the most amount of free space back ....

I appreciate this discussion. Messing with Exchange is not for the faint hearted and before I do anything I need to think and plan--a lot.
The sizes of the database are as follows:
priv1.edb - 12GB
priv1.stm - 14GB
pub1.edb - 145MB
pub1.stm - 6MB
log total - 25MB

Total disk (D:) size is 67GB with 23 GB unused.

The registry value for log size is 80GB
According to the last event 1221 there is 40MB of free space after defrag (4:15AM).

Our plan is to:
1. Ask users to delete their old emails.
2. Delete unused public folders (eventhough this does not get much)
3. Since we backup daily change the exchange settings to keep deleted emails 3 days and deleted mailboxes 30 days.
4. Place limits on the users mailboxes. I think the boss is looking at 200MB.
5. After all the above do a weekend offline defrag.

Actually I have found out that an offline defrag of Exchange 2003 SP2 is not necessary.

See: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998066(EXCHG.65).aspx

White space is not figured in the database size computed by Exchange when it does maint. We need to our deletion plan to keep the database under control but the offline defrag would do no good.

by: RancyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 21:48:51ID: 25756857

Can you please keep the value to 35Gb as the combined size of (priv1.edb - 12GB + priv1.stm - 14GB) is just 26 and may be the registry set above 75 is causing the issue ........... Also this registry value should not be set above 75 that can cause issue ..........make it to 35 and restart the Information store service ................. as Doing nothing is not going to help the cause or the issue and still the Stores would dismount every morning ........

by: MyrtWPosted on 2009-11-06 at 06:22:34ID: 31650345

The answer did not acknowledge the key point that an offline defrag was not necessary.
