Question

How do I force users to open a specific website when they log into Terminal Server 2008

Asked by: susnewyork

Hi, I have a brand new Server 2008 Terminal Server. I would like to use the "Start the following program on connection" option on the rdp client to force users to open the internet to a certain site when they log in. I dont want the users to be able to do anything else on the server.

I added iexplore.exe to the RemoteApp and allowed any command line arguments. However when i add the following path C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe msn.com to the rdp client start up path, I get an error stating "Access is denied. This initial program cannot be started: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" msn.com
This used to work on my Server2003 TS. I am new to Server2008 so dont assume I know anything about it.

Thanks!

If you are using RemoteApp there is no need to set anything on the client. RemoteApp is supposed to be used for either creating an MSI you will distribute to the clients or with TS Web Access. In this case they would see on a webpage the icon for Internet Explorer and when clicking on it, IE would be launched off the TS. If creating the MSI you can set it to show up on the local PC start menu for example.
Another option is not to use RemoteApp at all and then set the startup application.

OK. I dont need RemoteApp. I deleted the RemoteApp object and tried just with the rdp client set to open "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"   but I got the same error.

This exact open command works perfectly on my Server2003 TS.

Does it work if you logon as administrator? What about just Iexplore.exe?

I'd limit the local security profiles to do anything, then set IE to startup (windows startup)with the homepage you want.

I think your problem is coming from RemoteApp installation. IT has a setting in it that restricts the programs a user can run on startup

If you go into TS RemoteApp Manager and click on the "RDP Settings Change" link it will bring up a control panel.  Click on the Terminal Server tab and there at the bottom is an option box "Access to unlisted programs".

If you don't plan on using it, just uninstall the RemoteApp feature all together.
