Make sure certificate is installed. From the workstation go to http://remote.mydomain.com
Now make sure in your Outlook configuration the server name is entered in the form servername.mydomain.local
Enter your user name in the form mydomain.local/user or user@mydomain.local (sometimes leaving the .local off will work also but generally including the .local helps)
Don't click on Check Name.... it won't work until you are authenticated.
Also in your proxy settings, it should be msstd:remote.mydomaiin.com
That should do it for you. Let me know if this helps.

What you are talking about is HTTP over RPC.
You need either to have a trusted SSL certificate installed on the server or install the self-signed certificate via IE onto the local PC to get HTTP over RPC to work.
Can you also test your settings on https://testexchangeconnec tivity.com and see if the HTTP over RPC test passes.
