Question

Migration to Exchange 2010 problems

Asked by: Blade_lb

Hi,

I am currently moving my Exchange 2007 server to Exchange 2010. I installed Exchange 2010 normally on a new server. I moved my mailboxes and public folders normally as well. I turned off my Exchange 2007 server to see if evrything is ok before removing the Ex2k7 server for good. When I go in the Exchange management console to check on CAS, the OWA, offline addressbook and activesync, i receive an error message that RPC failure and cannot connect to the old server. When I turn on the Ex2k7 server all works fine. I ran the command get-owavirtualdirectory and I saw that all the virtual directories still point to the Ex2k7 server. only the offline addressbook points to both the ex2k7 and 2k10. Can someone help in this issue? Urgent help needed.
thanks
Dany

Have you properly removed/decommisioned the old server?
It is not just turn off.

Sorry, I can not find some E2007 to E2010 migration guide, but the steps should be quite similar in migration E2003->E2007. At the end you must uninstall E2007 - normally connected to network, so the AD and E2010 are aware that E2007 is decomissioned.
Steps migration to E2007:

If you just turn off, it won't be OK, because you have not cleaned out records to old server with right procedure.

thanks, i have already checked the above document. What i need help about is how to make Ex2010 look for the virtual directories locally. I checked, they are created on the Ex2010 but Ex2010 still contacts the EX2k7 server.

Virtual directories are created while installing client access role. I think that virtual directories will be updated to correct values after uninstalling E2007. In all migrations I have done, I never changed any virtual directories setting manually.
(I have done some migrations E2000->E2003->E2007. But I have not seen E2010 - yet.)

Double check if everything was migrated correctly and then uninstall E2007.
Do you have some migration guide for E2010. Maybe it wont be bad to find one - I always use official Ms guides.
You can leave both servers on without any impact on users. (I hope everything is working fine with both servers on). In this way you can buy some time to find migration instructions for E2010.
Deinstallation of E2007 you can do at anytime.

Have u created proper certificate for E2010 or just used e2k7 cert...also check its internal  URLs for OWA, OAB, Autodiscover, activesync and EWS.

Are u able to open OWA for migrated user to E2010 ?
Are u able to configure their outlook profile using autodiscover or manully ?

by: Blade_lbPosted on 2009-11-07 at 12:08:12ID: 25767813

i still did not create any certificate. but i can open from the ex2010 server OWA for a migrated user. but my problem is when i turn off the ex2k7 server, in the EMC when i go to the CAS role or from the management shell an error is given (RPC cannot connect to ex2k7 server). as i mentioned before if both server are on, the get-owavirtualdirectory lists all virtual directories pointing to the ex2k7.

But it depends, from which powershell u run this command. What u get when u open powershell of E2010 and then perform the above command.

Also do force replicaiton between ur domain controllers.

my problems were fixed now. I followed the below link:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd351133%28EXCHG.140%29.aspx

and to complete the process, I uninstalled the Ex2k7 server.

thank everyone for the help.
