Question

How do I implement a Copied Mailbox Database

Asked by: Kumerian

I am at end of my wits here so I thought I would give this a try. Just started migrating users to 2007 from 2003. The first issue we had was the transaction logs getting full on the C even though everything was being moved to our Net Appliance Share drive. So we expanded the C to get it back up and running and tried to move the Logs to a share which ended up causing a huge issue. For some reason the default database became missing during the move and our new environment went down. So we copied the database and Trans log so we could reinstall the mailbox roll. Now that we are trying to mount the existing database we get an error say file already exit cannot write to an existing file. Even though the database was not backed up we did make a copy it is that exchange 200 does not like that. Here is the error we are getting when mounting the existing database and the event logs.

Error Database is in inconsistent state starting database "First Storage Group\Unlimted Users" on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store.

As you are running of a copy, there is no risk, so if the database file is suspect corrupt you may need to use the eseutil tool.

See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998249.aspx

I would run an integrity check and then look towards restore/repair

Farazhkan

Thanks for the reply but the enviroment was working before the Default Mailbox Database became missing and we had to start over. I did check to see if the server were in the Manage auditing and they were. After reinstalling the Mailbox role I was able to get the default MAilbox database back and mount it but im not able to mount our user databases

Also, take a look at the ExTRA tools available with 2007.

In particular

EMC --> Toolbox --> Database Troubleshooter

Give the correct path for the database, like ESEUTIL /G "c:\data\unlimted_users.edb"

Also hope you are trying to mount the database which you are copied from exchange 2007 server. If you are creating the new database and mounting the store the users will be in disconnected state as you are not mounting the database in original store. you need to use the following command to correct the same.

get-mailbox database <old database> | move-mailbox targetdatabase <new database> -configurationonly:$true

You may refer this msexchange article for details on moving a database.

Thanks for all the responses had to use to the ESEUTIL and run repair and defrag then mount the databases. Only drawback is users lose some of the information in their mailboxes
