Move Mailboxes/Public Folders from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

Hi Everyone,

I did a little searching on the site, but I didn't see anyone with my exact scenario, so I thought I'd ask.

Our current implementation is as follows:

1. We have an Exchange 2003 server in our "old domain"/organization (olddomain.local)
2. I've configured a new DC and a new Exchange 2010 server in our "new domain"/organization (newdomain.org).

I've already migrated the users from the old domain to the new domain while preserving their SIDs, using the admt by establishing a two-way trust between the two domains.

I'm now ready to migrate the mailboxes and public folders from the Exchange 2003 server to the Exchange 2010 server. What is the best practice to do this?

I've read on MS's site that you can use the mailbox move procedure if their withing the same organization, but they're not.

Also, since my organization jumped the gun on using the new domain for e-mail, is there a way I can simultaneously run both servers, or do I have to do a direct cut-over after mailbox and public folder migration? What I mean is that the 2003 server accepts e-mail for recipients in olddomain and newdomain (i believe it was configured for two namespaces), while the new server is going to accept e-mail for just newdomain.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Ok so.. I'm not sure if i completely understand your problem here, but you can use the Exmerge tool on your Exchange 2003 box and get all the mailboxes out... yes its a pain that its a max of 2GB per file, if you have larger files then you will have to export by date ranges to keep the files small, then go here http://www.exchangeinbox.com/article.aspx?i=102  (This is for Exchange 2007) and thats how you could go about importing the mailboxes back in..

Also, running both mailservers at the same time can get a little messy and im not sure if you want to since they are on seperate domains?..

Okay so exmerge and import-mailbox is fairly self-explanatory.  Thanks!

One more question--

On the new domain the users don't have any mailboxes attached to their accounts. do i create a mailbox first, then import the old .pst file? or does it create the mailbox for the user when the .pst file is imported?

No you will need to create the mailboxes.

Yup. All set! Thanks!

I had found that you can do cross org mailbox moves using this method - see link, which prevents the pst to import.  Do some checking though it does some funky things like tries to copy some ad attributes.

There were not comments on how the Public Folders where migrated or replicated.  Is there a path to migrate the public folder between the 2 orgs without having or introducing a legacy exchange server

@AGSS: try this post: https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/25101690/Error-importing-PST-files-into-Exchange-2010.html

I exported the public files as PST and imported them into the exchange server. Exchange 2010 will be the last server to support public folders, however, so you should be weary of this method. You may want to move forward with shared mailboxes as outlined by MS.

I am in the position of wanting to import my public folders that are in a pst file exported from exchange 2003 into an Exchange 2010 server on a different domain.  mattai says his done it but not how he has done it.  I have imported loads of user mailboxes successfully into Exchange 2010 from pst files but the Import-Mailbox  requires a -identity to distinguish the mailbox to put the information in.  Technet suggests using get-mailbox to find the correct name.  get-public folder gives IPM-SUBTREE but Import-Mailbox -identity "IPM-SUBTREE" says user cannot be found.  So how do you do it.
