Just a word of warning: doing this will work 9Seen it done a lot) but you WILL loose your single instance storage on the backup set - so 50Gb Exchange might suddenly turn out to be 80 or90Gb of PST files.  Also keep in mind large mailboxes - PST's are not really meant to grow larger than 2Gb...

Different one, is it the import mailbox commands?
yes.
once you have done the brick level backups.

or use Outlook and do it manually.
Yeah you Export data from Mailboxes on Exchange 2003 with Exmerge and use Import command in Exchange 2007
If you Export using Outlook then you cannot use Export command in Exchange 2007 you will have to do the entire Import and Export using Outlook as it uses unicode whereas Exchange uses ANSI code ...
You can export using Exmerge and then import using Outlook if you wish.  You can also create the PST files in Outlook in both versions of the PST

You also need to note that any mailboxes over 2GB in size will need to be filtered for export (detailed in the link I provided) or done manually using Outlook
Ok, thanks, only thing is has to be done centrally because of geographic reasons.  Will the import mailbox command work?
no reason why not.
Last question, will it import calendar and tasks?  Also will users be able to send from old emails?
yes it should import all the folders.

You will not be able to reply from old e-mails because the exchange organisation will be different.
But you can fix this by following this article: http://blogs.technet.com/mbaher/archive/2008/02/17/auto-complete-reply-ability-i-need-my-x500.aspx
yes everything will work with Export and Import but if using Outlook then we will have to add X500 if the servers have different Exchange ORG or AG Name ..
How to set X500 proxy addresses for Exchange Server 2003 recipients and for Exchange 2000 Server recipients
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313324
That won't work for Exchange 2007, it is only for Exchange 2000/2003

You can add them manually in Exchange Management Console if you want to but the procedure in the blog will add it for all mailboxes.

So they wont be able to reply from old emails?  What if you export using exmerge and import with the powershell, is that the same result?  Or can you import the .pst's on the exchange server?

How do you fix the replies to old emails.

Also, I guess you cant move at the storage group level?

If you use Exmerge and Powershell you will have to as it does not happen only in one scenario its when Move mailbox is done ..

Rancy> as I said before that is for Exchange 2000/2003 I believe the author is looking to move to Exchange 2007???
The script in the blog I posted earlier will resolve this issue.
Ok, I looked at the script, would the same issue exist using the move mailbox cmdlet.

I tested moving a box across forests and getting error:

Organizational unit "domain.com /Employees" was not found.  Please be sure you have typed it correctly.
Also, the log shows searching objects "domain.com /Employees" of type "exchangeOrganizationUnit" under the root "$null".
Not sure if you can use it between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 orgs,

See here for more details: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/11/02/430289.aspx
So this should move data between the org's.  I found this one:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997145(EXCHG.80).aspx

Still getting that error though
have you moved the users over using ADMT?
yes
And you are following the procedure step by step?

Which command are you running that fails? Can you post the full command?
Running these commands first:
$SourceCredential = Get-Credential  (This is the username and password for source domain)
$TargetCredential = Get-Credential (This is the username and password for target domain)

Move-Mailbox -TargetDatabase SourceExchangeServer\First Storage Group\Standard Store - Employees" -Identity john -GlobalCatalog gc01.targetdomain.com -SourceForestGlobalCatalog GC01.sourcedomsin.com NTAccountOU "OU=Employees,DC=sourcedomainl,DC=com " -SourceForestCredential $SourceCredential -TargetForestCredential $TargetCredential

Or can the old mail server be added to the new domain and then the data migrated?
Last question, does exmerge move all the folders out of the box?  Calendar, tasks, sent, deleted and inbox?
and contacts... yes all !
